THE Ryder Cup is set to bring a big economic boost to the Mid West in 2027, and homeowners in Clare may be able to make tens of thousands of euros through renting their houses to golf fans. The accomommodationfortheevent website is providing a platform for those seeking to rent their houses, and in a number of cases the sums being sought are eye watering. A sum of €17,000 is currently being sought for one four-bedroom house in the Bunratty/Cratloe area. While it’s a huge sum for what’s a short event, it is by no means exceptional, with several property owners looking for more than €40,000 and some up to €50,000. Not all of these are in particularly close proximity to Adare either, with one outside Listowel seeking €45,000. A sum of €28,000 is being sought for an apparently unremarkable three bedroom house in Limerick city. COUNCIL CEO Pat Dowling vowed that the major opportunities offered to the region by having the 2027 Ryder Cup played in Adare won’t be spurned. Just after it was announced that the tournament would be played in Adare, Dublin Airport came out with a now infamous tweet, in which it claimed it was the “key gateway” for the competition. This resulted in a significant backlash in Clare, due to the slight on Shannon Airport, and something of the wording of the tweet was reflected in the motion Ian Lynch brought before Monday’s meeting. Ireland is underachieving in its sport tourism potential despite having the capacity to be a major global player, the Shannon Group European Sport Tourism Summit in Limerick, heard this week. According to one of the world’s leading experts on sport market intelligence, Mike Laflin of Sportcal, Ireland ranks just 60th in the world, behind Barbados and Andorra, in terms of attracting major global sport events over the past six years and he recommends the establishment of an agency to devise a ten-year strategy and head-up bidding for major global events. Sport tourism is estimated to be worth €450bn globally and growing at a rate of 14% per annum, compared to wider tourism growth of 5%. Mr Laflin was one of a host of leading international experts who addressed the summit, which is one of the leading global think-tanks on the industry annually. Aer Lingus Regional, operated by Stobart Air, announced this Wednesday the addition of over 2,000 seats to Scotland to facilitate golf fans for the Ryder Cup in September. The airline has added 15 extra flights to Edinburgh from Shannon, Cork and  Dublin for Ryder Cup week, September 22 to 29. Shannon-based passengers can avail of an extra seven return flights which amounts to an extra 1,008 seats, double the normal capacity. The airline has seen a huge demand from US-based passengers. Over a thousand passengers flying into Dublin are connecting to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen on the week of the Ryder Cup. The Ryder Cup takes place at Gleneagles, Scotland on Friday, September 26  and will conclude on Sunday, 28. The Gleneagles Golf Resort is about a 55 minute drive from Edinburgh Airport.
