New Shannon flights need support

GETTING new routes into Shannon is a welcome development but is but one part of the equation, according to Shannon Chamber’s chief executive. Helen Downes. Ms Downes was addressing a Chamber-hosted business breakfast at Dromoland Castle Hotel this Wednesday,  at which Ryanair’s chief operating officer and deputy chief executive, Michael Cawley, was the keynote speaker. “In operating nine  new routes at Shannon from April, Ryanair is providing a pipeline of seats which need to be filled; it’s now up to the tourism and business sectors, and the general public, to take responsibility for filling those seats, and showing their commitment to Shannon,” Ms Downes said. Before take-off, the children were entertained in the terminal building. Operation Santa,  which had 10% of seats reserved for children with special needs from the region, marks a new deal between the airline and Shannon for 18 destinations next year, dramatically extending connectivity options for airport users.

The initiative also celebrates Shannon’s first year as an independent entity, a year which has seen it make significant advances across a number of fronts, including stabilising passenger numbers and moving to growth mode for 2014. The free flights will operate on Saturdays and Sundays over this and the following weekend from Shannon Airport six times daily for 40 minutes each – enough time for the flights to get sufficiently airborne for Santa to jump on board from his sleigh and spread the festive cheer among the excited young passengers. The magical one-off opportunity will enable many children not alone to meet Santa some 15,000ft above sea …
