Spike in Illegal Dumping and Littering in East Clare

DUMPING and littering in East Clare have prompted calls from community organisations for more to be done to tackle the issues. While the Tidy Towns competition has been called off for this year, community leaders say they are still determined to address persistent littering in their areas. In Mountshannon, which scooped a national Tidy Towns title in 1981 and a Bronze Medal last year, large-scale dumping of household waste has been a recurrent issue. Joanne Dunphy-Allen, Co-Chairperson of Mountshannon Community Council said that a recent incident had generated anger locally. “It is very maddening, particularly because the Scariff Recycling Centre is just down the road,” she pointed out. “We’ve had refuse scattered around the pier and someone even managed to dump a significant amount in at the back of the bottle banks. That would not be an easy thing to do. The community has been very quick to go in an clear up, but this shouldn’t be happening in the …

Council to install CCTV to deter Doonbeg dumping

Clare County Council is to install CCTV cameras, both covert and mounted, around Shragh Bog in Doonbeg in the hope of shedding light on those responsible for the indiscriminate dumping of domestic waste in the locality. Doonbeg Development Association has ambitious plans to develop walking routes around the parish and have just started work on the provision of a looped walking route at Shragh Bog. However, members of the association were infuriated to discover that the route, a short distance from the Wild Atlantic Way, has become a major blackspot and the scale of illegal dumping “defied belief”. Clare County Council’s environmental community warden for West and North Clare, Conor Leyden has been working with the group in an effort to address the issue and next Tuesday he has organised for a private contractor to be on site for a major clean up operation. “Doonbeg community group is very proactive and doing great work on the ground in the village, …

Clare County Council has completed clean ups of significant illegal dumping sites at Ballyblood Bog, Tulla; Donail, Killimer; and Islandavanna, Clarecastle. More than 40 tonnes of illegally dumped waste were collected during the clean-ups were facilitated by national funding from the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment (DCCAE) supported by the Waste Enforcement Regional Lead Authority (WERLA). Anne Haugh, Director, Physical Development, Clare County Council, said, “Clare County Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team secured funding this year to allow a number of significant clean ups to take place across the county. A number of illegal dump sites were prioritised by the enforcement team and additional monies were drawn down in recent weeks, bringing the total grant aid under the Anti-Dumping Initiative to €40,000.” “There were a number of sites identified for action under the Anti-Dumping Initiative. The recently cleared sites in Tulla, Clarecastle and Killimer are particularly notorious illegal dumping locations and covert CCTV cameras and signage have been installed …

Keep Clare beaches looking good

Clare County Council is urging visitors to Clare’s beaches this June Bank Holiday Weekend to take responsibility for their rubbish by bringing it home with them. The local authority says it is also installing additional refuse facilities at Clare’s Blue Flags in an effort to minimise littering while litter wardens have been deployed to monitor littering activity. “Our beach is a fantastic resource for the wider community and it’s up to us all to ensure that we take home what we bring to the beach”, said Cyril Feeney, area engineer with with th council. He added, “The council wishes to acknowledge those who have used the public bins to dispose of their litter. These bins are emptied regularly each day but often reach their capacity due to the unprecedented …

Beachgoers urged to take responsibility for litter

AHEAD of what is expected to be a busy weekend at Clare’s beaches, Clare County Council is urging visitors to “Respect the Banner” by keeping Clare and its beaches litter-free. Clare has been one of the hottest spots in Ireland this week with temperatures regularly hitting 26-28c, which has resulted in a significant increase in the numbers of visitors to popular seaside resorts such as Lahinch and Kilkee. Joan Tarmey, Environmental Awareness Officer commented, “We have incredible beaches stretching along our coastline that is the envy the world over.  With these incredible assets comes a responsibility to look after and respect them.  The council is calling on people to ‘Respect the Banner’ by keeping it litter free. “The council wants to acknowledge the vast majority of diligent people visiting our beaches who ensure all empty packaging or picnic waste is taken home or alternatively deposited in the public bins provided.
