Residents object to Westbury house plans

Former Defence Minister Willie O’Dea and Councillor Cathal Crowe have joined 125 residents to oppose the completion of 22 residential units and site works in Westbury. The largest housing estate in South-East Clare could get even bigger if Clare County Council grants planning permission for an extra 22 houses. According to Punch Consulting Engineers, planning permission for this development was granted under a previous application, which has now expired. Sixteen of the proposed units are located in the proposed cul-de-sac adjacent to No. 87 Bruachlan, while the remaining six units are situated in another cul-de-sac between properties 24 and 31. A comprehensive objection signed by 127 people was drafted by Councillor Crowe, following a recent public meeting he organised in Larkin’s Pub, Parteen to oppose this “NAMA planning application”. Ahoy there for Dromineer lifeboat station

Plans for  a permanent Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat Station in Dromineer will be unveiled at a public meeting in the village on Wednesday. Members of the public will be able to meet architects and engineers who drafted the plans, at a consultation meeting in the Lough Derg Yacht Club from 7pm to 9pm. The current station began operations from the premises of Lough Derg Yacht Club at Dromineer, halfway down the east shore of the lake in North Tipperary. Now that plans for a new permanent station in the village are well underway, it is important that people become engaged with the consultation process. On May 25 last, the Lough Derg RNLI Lifeboat Station celebrated its 10th birthday. Over the past 10 years, the lifeboat was launched 240 times, 60 of those at night. Brian Boru to invade Milwaukee

An all-island tourism delegation from the four main locations with connections Brian Boru will embark on a promotional drive in the United States this week. Coinciding with the 1,000 anniversary of Boru’s death at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014, National Brian Boru Programme representatives from Clare, Armagh, Dublin and Tipperary, will attend the annual Milwaukee Irish Fest in Wisconsin where they will be seeking to attract some of the estimated 150,000 festival goers to Ireland. Boru is a central theme of this year’s Milwaukee Irish Fest from August 14-17. Established in 1981 by members of Milwaukee’s Irish community, the Fest covers 74 acres of Lake Michigan’s shoreline and showcases Irish music, history, dance, drama, sports and culture. The Festival is also used by tourist agencies such as Tourism Ireland, Aer Lingus and CIE Tours as an opportunity to market Ireland as a desirable tourist destination. Scattery Island photo exhibition

THE  intriguing history of Scattery Island and Kililmer – Tarbert,  can be appreciated in a new photographic exhibition launched at the University of Limerick  by UL president, Professor Don Barry. The exhibition entitled ‘Inhabiting the Shannon Estuary: Scattery Island and Kilimer-Tarbert’ was developed from the activities of the Scattery Island Heritage and Tourism Forum which ran and won the ‘Community Gathering of the Year’ award from Chambers Ireland for their Island Gathering in July 2013. The Scattery Island exhibition was pieced together by the voluntary group whose long term aim is to preserve the physical and built environment on the island, working with the Office of Public Works and Clare County Council. The photographs are drawn from the Limerick City Museum Collection, the National Monuments Service, the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland and personal perspectives provided by the Forum members.
