Old friends reunited in Mullagh

BACK in 1934 and 1935 three lifelong friends were born in Mullagh, Patrick Clancy, Joe Sexton and Pat Sexton (also known as Paddy Jim Dan). Many years ago Joe moved to England, Pat setted in Canada, while Patrick has lived all his life in the area where they grew up. Despite the distances between them, the three have managed to remain in contact and have all been in Mullagh this week, with Joe and Pat meeting up in person for the first time in 54 years. The trio met with the Clare Champion at their alma mater, Mullagh National School on Tuesday afternoon. Asked what school was like when they attended in the 1940s, two of the three, Pat and Joe answer in unison. “Tough,” as they recall the daily hardships of school life in their childhood. However all three remember having a teacher called Mrs O’Connell who they say was a lovely woman, while Patrick recalled taking drastic action …

St Flannan’s class of 1968 meet again

THERE may have been a little more grey in the hair but when former pupils of St Flannan’s College, Ennis reunited last weekend, some for the first time in 50 years, it was like nothing had changed. Tony Gleeson, former pupil of the historic Ennis secondary school and one of the organising committee of the 50th reunion, said, “It was a bit of shock for some when they came in and looked at each other. Naturally emotions were high, as many of the students had not met in the intervening years and recognition and identification was challenging in a few instances”. However, before long, they were soon chatting away to each other. “It was like going back to 1963 when they all met first.” On Friday, the 1968 Leaving Certificate class of St Flannan’s came together to mark the 50th anniversary of their time in the school. Global O’Deas reunite in Ennis

OVER 170 O’Dea delegates from all over the globe assembled to celebrate the recent ninth International O’Dea Clan Gathering, in Ennis, from July 11 to 13 and at the ancestral home of Dysert O’Dea Castle. This triennial event, which began in 1990, brought together O’Deas of every variation, including Deas, O’Days, Days and Odyas, from all over the world. This year, there were delegates from places as far away as Poland, the United States, Australia, United Kingdom and New Zealand, as well as a number of delegates from Ireland also in attendance. Locally, clan members from Ennis, Kilfenora, Shannon, Lissycasey and Cooraclare were also present. Ennis native, James O’Sullivan, now resident in San Francisco, whose mother, Cecelia, is an O’Dea, made a surprise visit home for the clan gathering. The reunion commenced with a civic reception in Ennis. Councillor James Breen, the deputy mayor, warmly welcomed the delegates and, afterwards, the O’Deas returned to The Old Ground Hotel for a …
