THE pre-Christmas decision not to relegate any team from the 2021 Clare Senior Hurling Championship and proceed with an 18 clubs format for the coming season was reaffirmed by Clare GAA in Treacy’s West County Hotel this evening, reports Eoin Brennan. Despite granting the request of Broadford, Scariff, Smith O’Brien’s and Whitegate for a special meeting of the Clare County Board seven days previously to contest the legality, procedure and consequences of the 18-16 vote on December 21, new Clare GAA Chairman Kieran Keating informed the delegates that window of opportunity to appeal had elapsed. With no dissenters on the night of the vote or any appeal within the allotted three days of the December 21st meeting, the decision to void any senior demotion stood, with the Master Fixtures Committee currently formulating a fixtures plan for 2022 to include 18 senior hurling teams. 18 teams will contest the 2022 Clare Senior Hurling Championship, it was decreed following a vote at a special meeting of the Clare GAA County Board in the West County Hotel this evening, reports Eoin Brennan. Following an hour long debate on the relegation debacle that ranged from the prospect of no adult team in either football or hurling championship being relegated in 2021 to all four senior hurling relegation candidates (Clarecastle, Clooney-Quin, Crusheen and O’Callaghan’s Mills) potentially being demoted to intermediate if as, indicated, they all failed to show for any revised relegation play-offs, the clubs voted 18 to 16 in favour of scraping any trapdoor. Stemming from a successful appeal from Crusheen to deem the round robin relegation group null and void, the onus was put back on the County Board to decide how to resolve this issue. Clare 0-23 Cork 0-19 Clare sit comfortably at the top of the Allianz hurling league division 1 table this evening following their third successive victory in this season’s campaign. Before a somewhat disappointing attendance of 4,905 at Cusack park this afternoon they led from the outset against Cork who were forced to make two late changes with corner forwards Alan Cadogan and Conor Lehane being replaced by Daniel Kearney and Shane Kingston. The win has all but assured Clare of a place in the knock out stage of the competition while guaranteeing them their division 1 A status for next season It was one way traffic in the opening half at the end of which Clare held an eleven point advantage with the score at 0-16 to 0-5. The way is clear for the quarter finals of the Clare senior hurling championship and the pairings will be decided on Monday evening at GAA headquarters in Clareabbey. Ahead of this weekend’s round 3 games four clubs, Sixmilebridge, Newmarket, Clonlara and Eire Og had booked their places in the last eight. When the draw is made on Monday they will be in one pot with the other pot holding the names Ballyea, Cratloe, Tulla and Clooney-Quin. Despite lining out without the injured Sean Collins and Cathal McInerney, Cratloe proved too strong for St. Josephs and ran out with a sixteen point winning margin. The first half was well contested but Cratloe’s experience saw them pull away in the last quarter on a day when teenager Billy Connors was their top scorer, finishing with 0-10 to his credit. The draws for round 3 in the senior and intermediate hurling championships plus the relegation play offs in both grades were made this Monday evening and the games will take place on Saturday and Sunday week (August 26/27) as will the quarter finals in the junior B hurling championship, the draws for which were also made at a meeting in Clare GAA headquarters in Clareabbey.   There are two changes in personnell on the Clare team to face Dublin in Sunday’s relegation play off from that which started against  Waterford last week. Brendan Bugler returns to the starting line up at wing back in place of Jason McCarthy while David Reidy returns to the team and he is named at corner forward in place of Ian Galvin. Waterford 2-21 Clare 1-22 A disappointing two point loss to Waterford in round 5 of the Allianz hurling league at Cusack Park this afternoon means that Clare must play Dublin in a relegation play off next weekend. Understandably, the result left Clare players and management very disappointed as this was a contest they had enough chances to win. While they can point to the fact that they played some great hurling in what was a very entertaining contest, their failure to emerge with victory left the home side’s followers in the attendance of 6,640, leave a sunny Cusack park in a very disappointed mood. The visitors started as if they were going to record a big win, racing into a 1-3 to 0-0 lead after just six minutes when they had the aid of a fresh wind.
