Raheen hospital moves towards HIQA standards

THE Health Service Executive is to lodge a planning application in the coming weeks for the construction of an extension to Raheen Community Hospital to include six single rooms, one double room with en-suites and a new patient sitting area. The HSE publicised its intention to seek planning permission on Thursday and, commenting on the proposed development, Labour TD, Michael McNamara has said it is “a crucial first step in bringing the community hospital up to HIQA standards”. He said the extension, if granted, will ensure greater comfort and care for the patients in this highly-regarded facility. “The planning application has been expected for a long time but I believe that recent modifications to the plans, based on work carried out at Ennistymon and Kilrush community hospitals, will make for a better outcome at Raheen. “It is proposed to construct a new single-storey extension to include six single and one double bedrooms, all with en-suite facilities. Sisters on top of the world

SCARIFF sisters, Joanne Treacy and Kate (Treacy) O’Donoghue recently climbed Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in aid of Raheen Hospital Support Services Ltd. Joanne is currently living and working in London and Kate is living in Clane, County Kildare, but both are originally from Cooleenbridge, Scariff, and their native parish is still very close to their hearts. This is why they chose to do the climb in aid of Raheen Hospital. So far, the siblings have raised nearly €1,000. They climbed Kilimanjaro through hail, rain, snow and shine over six days, reaching the summit on the morning of September 6. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa and also the highest freestanding peak in the world. The Scariff sisters trekked the 64km up and down, a distance that equates to summiting Carrauntoohill six times over. Speaking about why they chose to raise funds for Raheen Hospital Support Services Ltd, Kate Treacy said, “The charity we have chosen is very close to …

Raheen Upgrade plans on Monday

By Carol Byrne PLANS for upgrading Raheen Community Hospital to HIQA standards are expected to be outlined at a meeting on Monday between the HSE and the Hospital Support Group. Speaking after tabling a Ðáil question on the failure of the HSE to meet the Support Group, Deputy Michael McNamara told a HSE Forum in Limerick earlier this week that it should not take a parliamentary question to get a meeting. He said it was good that the meeting is taking place and recognised the commitment by HSE area manager Bernard Gloster, which may see plans for Raheen finalised and published within weeks. “Everybody is delighted that work is almost complete at Ennistymon and Kilrush community hospitals but it is very unsatisfactory for people in East Clare that progress has been so slow, especially as Raheen must be HIQA compliant by July 2015. It also has put Raheen Support Group in a very difficult situation. While fundraising will be required to assist with this …
