THE 49th Kilmurry Ibrickane-North Clare Athletic Club and Run the Banner 2019 Road Race Series number 2 and Michael Egan Memorial five-mile road race and 5km fun walk attracted a very high-quality field of runners and walkers to the start with Kenneth Rodgers, St John’s, having the field on a big chase when he set out on a very fast pace from the Quilty Tavern, along with Rory Chesser, Ennis Track, and Cian McDonald, Ballyroan/Abbeyleix and District AC. The group of three were together for three miles, until Rodgers made a decisive move with the wind to his back and on the Quilty-Kilrush Road, he had 20 seconds on Chesser with a mile remaining and he held that lead all the way to the finish to retain his title in 26.40 from Chesser (26.57) and McDonald (27.20). THE shocking events of Monday night in Manchester stunned the world, including the Mancunian community in Clare. The suicide bombing at the Manchester Arena killed 22 people and injured 59. Manchester native Ollie Mullooly, who is a very well-known DJ in Clare, has been living in the county for 17 years. He first heard about the tragic events, which followed an Ariana Grande concert attended by 19,000 people, on the family viber group from his brother-in-law in Australia. “Shocking. By 2018, the Quilty-based seaweed weed company, established by the Talty family, is anticipating a €1 million turnover. The firm, Wild Irish Seaweed, was considerably boosted in this ambition on Sunday night, when Evan and Gerard Talty appeared on RTÉ’s Dragons’ Den where they were successful in pitching for a €50,000 investment from Alison Cowzer, one of the four dragons. “Everything changes now,” Evan told The Clare Champion on Monday. “While we’ve got this far on our own, we now have an investor on board so we have to be accountable to her and to prove that we can do what we said we’re going to do. We’ve also just been lined up for High Potential Start-Up status by Enterprise Ireland. They come in and give you €200,000 for a 10% share in your company,” he revealed. QUILTY girl Chloe Moloney will be a vital member of the Republic of Ireland’s U-19 soccer squad, as they seek to qualify for the European Championships next week. Managed by Dave Connell, all three games will be played at the Markets Field in Limerick in the elite qualifying round. Next Tuesday, Ireland will play Scotland at 7pm, followed by their second group game, against Ukraine, on Thursday, April 6, at the same time. On Sunday, April 9, at 2pm, Ireland will meet Finland in their final group game. THE company behind the 29-turbine Slieve Callan windfarm is offering grants totalling more than €1.5 million to the four communities close to the development, The Clare Champion has learned. Miltown Malbay, Kilmurry Ibrickane, Kilmaley and Inagh-Kilnamona are each to receive €100,000 of the proposed grants before the end of this year, while the remainder will be paid in instalments for up to 25 years. The developers committed to provide the funding in their planning application. Parishes will receive €20,000 a year for the first five years; €10,250 a year for the next 15 years and €5,000 annually for the last five years. Each parish is to receive approximately €378,000 from the developers, adding up to €1.515m. Public meetings were due to be held in Miltown, Inagh and Quilty on Wednesday night to address how best the money should be spent. A grieving father has issued an appeal for an end to the “frightening” culture of excess drinking involving some young people. Danny Mungovan, who runs Quilty Holiday Cottages, made the plea at the funeral mass for his son, Stephen (20), who was found by Irish Navy divers in the waters off Spanish Point last week. Addressing the packed congregation in the Star of the Sea Church and hundreds of mourners who stood outside on Sunday last, Danny said his family would never forget the work of all the emergency services, volunteers and neighbours who never stopped walking the shore night and day. This is the second time that tragedy has struck the family. Another son, Michael (22), was killed when he was struck by a train while he was working at Vauxhall Station, South London in October 2000. Clare County Council has admitted that current sea defences in Quilty, Spanish Point and the White Strand Beach in Miltown Malbay are not sufficient to deal with a repeat of the adverse flooding in early 2014. At this week’s West Clare District meeting, Councillor Michael Hillery asked that the council “would present a progress report on the coastal protection works” at the the three locations. “The existing sea defences at all three areas are inadequate to withstand a similar storm to that of January 2014 again. To that end, funding is approved for by the Office of Public Works (OPW) for a single coastal erosion and flood risk management study for the section of coast from Quilty to Milltown Malbay, with particular focus on each of the three locations – Quilty, Spanish Point and Whitestrand,” council engineer Stephen Lahiffe explained in a written reply. “The scope of the consultant’s study must accord with the OPW’s guidance for such studies. Wild Irish Sea Veg , a small family run business operating from Caherush, between Quilty and Spanish Point, has been chosen by the Royal Family as one of seven Irish food companies to meet Camilla at a private showcasing in the City of the Tribes. “This is a huge honour for our company; it will give our products and company a great boost,” said Evan Talty. “We had to keep quite about this up to now but we’re delighted we can at last share the good news.
