THE Shannon Group has stated that it will restore a unilateral 20% pay cut imposed on its workforce once airport passenger numbers reach one million. However, any pay restoration may not be until the second half of 2022 before Shannon Airport will reach the one million target. This follows the Shannon Group telling the Labour Court that it currently estimates that passenger numbers for 2021 for Shannon Airport will be well short of one million and will reach 600,000 due to the Covid-19 pandemic impact. At the court, the Shannon Group revealed that passenger numbers collapsed last year to 360,000 from 1.72m in 2019. Unions representing 160 workers at all grades and including Airport Police and firefighters have rejected the offer by the Shannon Group to restore the 20percent pay-cut once passenger numbers top one million. The UK delivered the biggest increase in passenger numbers of any of Shannon Airport’s markets in the first half of 2016, figures show. Passenger numbers released by the airport today show that UK market, including London services, was up by 9% to 362,242 from January to the end of June compared to the same period last year. Overall, passenger numbers were up 4% to 791,155, with a healthy increase (5%) also in another key market, the US. The growth comes off the back of a 5% rise in passengers in 2014, which saw numbers climb by 22% in total from what they were when the airport was separated in 2013. PROFITABILITY at Shannon Airport “improved considerably” in 2014, a year in which passenger numbers also rose by 17%. That’s one of the messages from Shannon Group’s 2014 annual report, along with a commitment from Shannon Group chief executive, Neil Pakey, to correct what he called “historic underinvestment” at the airport and other facilities under the remit of Shannon Group plc. In the annual report, Mr Pakey outlined that “profitability of the airport has also improved considerably in 2014, with earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) of €4.6 million, an increase of 34% on 2013. This increase in profit was achieved in part through passenger growth and new routes, but also by managing cost efficiencies.” Mr Pakey added that work on lowering costs will continue this year, as will capital investment at the airport. “We will continue to address the operating cost base in 2015 and identify further cost efficiencies to ensure our sustainability and enable us to compete …

CLARE is set to reap the benefits from Shannon Airport’s enhanced 2014 summer season schedule, with research on passenger destinations from last year illustrating the airport’s influence on visitor numbers to the county. Shannon Airport has nine new services this year on European destinations – Ryanair with Munich, Paris, Faro, Warsaw, Krakow, Nice, Poitiers, Berlin, Fuerteventura and Aer Lingus Regional with Bristol – alone, many with very strong markets for inbound tourism. Critically also, following the growth of transatlantic services last year, US frequencies have also dramatically increased this year, bringing greater numbers again of US tourists, who on average spend 60% more than any others, into Clare. The last two weeks alone saw the resumption of United Airline’s Chicago service (daily from June), which on the back of its success last summer will have 88% additional capacity this year.  The past fortnight also saw Delta Airlines back with its daily JFK New York service, US Airways return with its …

SHANNON Airport’s recovery continued in September, with passenger numbers up for the fourth month in a row, this time by 7% on the same month in 2012. Total passenger numbers at Shannon last month were 224,492, up from 210,389 in September 2012. Transatlantic services showed an increase of 21% in passenger numbers over September last year, while European services were up by 4%. After several very bad years, and some very poor months in the early part of this year, passenger numbers started growing again in June. That month, saw an eight per cent increase in passengers, going from 148,531 in June 2012 to 160,573 in June of this year. In July, there was a 9.4% increase, going from 158,603 to 173,558. August saw a jump of 3%, going to 170,000 from around 165,000.
