Search is on for talented Clare teen to star alongside Oscar winner Olivia Colman

A UK-based casting company is interested in hearing from Clare teenagers as they search for a co-lead to star alongside Oscar winner Olivia Colman in their latest movie. The character, ‘Mully’ is a 13-year-old Irish boy, and Casting Director Elaine Grainger stresses that previous acting experience is not necessary for what she calls a “breakout role”. “For our upcoming feature film, Joyride, and playing joint-lead with Oscar winner Olivia Colman, we are hoping to discover a brand new cinematic talent for the role of 13-year-old Mully – to potentially find a future breakout film star. It is a complex, rewarding and challenging part; Mully is bold, sensitive, emotional, defiant and hilarious. The ideal boy will have a huge heart and boundless bravery, who will fearlessly take this journey with us. Mark pens Oscar entry

AN Ennis man could be set for Oscar gold after a film he penned has made the shortlist for nominations for the coveted award. Viva, a Spanish language film set in Havana written by Clare’s very own Mark O’Halloran has been named among nine movies shortlisted in the Foreign Language Film category. And in just a few short weeks, Mark the rest of the crew behind the acclaimed film will learn if they have made the final five nominees for next year’s 88th annual Academy Awards. Speaking to the Clare Champion this week Mark told us, “I’m very happy, I’m very surprised. It’s a very low budget film, made with a lot of dedication and heart. I’m pretty sure it’s the lowest budget film in the category so for it to have this impact is great. Clare secure quarter final spot

By Seamus Hayes Clare League 2 Desmond League 0 For the second year in succession, Clare have qualified for the play off stages of the Oscar Traynor cup, the inter league soccer competition. A 2-0 win over the Desmond league at the county grounds in Doora on Saturday evening, confirmed Clare’s position as the group winners and sealed their place in the last eight where they will have home advantage on a date to be announced. With a win and a draw over the two group favourites, Limerick and Galway under their belts, Clare had already sealed a place in the play offs prior to Saturday’s game. However, they needed to beat the Desmond league to secure top spot and a home quarter final.
