  WALKING enthusiasts in South-East Clare have been issued with an open invitation to work off the Christmas excesses by joining Ogonnelloe GAA club on a climb of Clare’s tallest mountain, Moylussa, midday on Saturday, December 29. In its annual Christmas community gathering, the club is going to make the most of its, and the county’s, biggest asset, Moylussa – the tallest point in the Slieve Bernagh Mountains at 532 metres – with an organised walk from midday. Walkers are asked to assemble for 11.45am. Last year, the community put on a special Christmas Musical Gala but, with major renovations on the Community Hall only just completed, it is taking to the outdoors for the 2018 festive season gathering. The starting point for the walk will be Two Mile Gate, with the two to three-hour – depending on levels of fitness – round-trek taking in the top of the mountain and, weather permitting, resplendent views across Lough Derg and well …

A FORMER landlord of a landmark London pub is hoping to get the chance to become a new tourism representative for the county. Gerry O’Brien, who recently retired from running The Churchill Arms in Kensington after 32 years, has built up a huge wealth of contacts who now want to visit him. Currently residing in Ennis, the 66-year-old Ogonnelloe man said he would love to link up with groups such as Clare Tourism or East Clare Tourism and become their part-time tourism representative to take people from all over the world around visitor attractions in Clare. “I would love the opportunity to be able to showcase the county. I am hoping I will get the opportunity to do this. “I’d love to do something in tourism, promoting Clare to visitors from the UK and abroad. Johnstownbridge, Kildare 1-10 Scariff-Ogonnelloe 1-9 There was heartbreak for Scariff-Ogonnelloe in this afternoon’s All-Ireland junior club camogie championship final at St. Brendans Park in Birr where they suffered a one point loss to the reigning champions, Johnstownbridge from Kildare. The value of experience was highlighted in this hard fought contest when the experience gained by the Kildare and Leinster champions over the past two years helped them to get over the line. Overall, they were marginally the better side but when the Clare girls review this tie, they will reflect on opportunities which were missed and which might have made the difference on the day. The teams swapped points three times in the opening quarter before Scariff-Ogonnelloe edged a point in front for the third time. The fallout from the recession and emigration was brought centre stage at Clare GAA County Board meeting this week, when there was strong support for a request from Ogonnelloe to be allowed to regrade from intermediate to junior A hurling level for 2016. In a detailed letter to the meeting, the East Clare club outlined their reasons for seeking to be regraded. “Over the past number of years, we have struggled as a club to compete at intermediate level due to a number of factors, which are largely outside of our control. It is now the wish of the entire club, having discussed it at our recent AGM, with players and supporters alike, to apply to be allowed to regrade for 2016.   All Ireland Junior Camogie Club Final Myshall (Carlow) 3-9 Scariff/Ogonnelloe 0-8 WHILE Myshall were deserved winners the scoreline is deceiving, as they only led the East Clare women by 1-8 to 0-8 after a minute of injury time. It was still possible that the East Clare side could force a replay, but the Carlow girls had very late goals from the outstanding Ciara Quirke and Olivia Jordan, and Quirke then pointed to leave the gap at ten points. Overall they were the better side, but there is no way that Scariff/Ogonnelloe were ten points a poorer team. The Clare side had fine performances from the likes of Susan Vaughan and particularly Mairéad Scanlon, but didn’t quite have the same quality as the Carlow women, who also won the title in 2012.
