THERE are hopes that a substantial number of the 500 redundancies at Shannon company Molex might yet be avoided. It is understood that a particular section of the Shannon plant has been particularly successful in recent times. The section in question provides products that are bought mainly by medical device company Aerogen, which has a base in Galway. According to Molex employees, around 100 staff have been working in this area and revenue in the region of €1.5 million per month has been coming in. If production of the items required by Aerogen is moved away from Shannon, it is likely to cause huge disruption for the Galway company. It is understood that the possibility of them being supplied with product from another Irish site has been raised but Aerogen management are said to be uneasy about such a move. WITH jobs going in a number of companies in Clare, the county’s Mayor Cathal Crowe said the situation is unprecedented, at a special meeting of Clare County Council on Friday afternoon. “The recent announcement of job losses in Clare has been quite unprecedented. The loss of more than 500 jobs in Molex, 240 jobs at Roche Clarecastle, potentially the loss of 114 jobs at Avara Pharmaceutical and the ongoing uncertainty at Moneypoint all has the potential to have a devastating impact on this county’s economy. There is also a knock-on effect, not yet known, for smaller businesses in the supply chain. We in Clare County Council must hold our counterparts in national government to account. MORE than 500 jobs have been lost at Molex in Shannon. Management held a meeting with staff this afternoon (Tuesday) where it was confirmed that the job losses would be effective from the first quarter of 2020. All jobs will be phased out next year. In a statement, the company said that “following a review of product lines manufactured at its facility in Shannon, Molex today (Tuesday) Molex has announced its intention to close that facility by the end of 2020, subject to an employee consultation process.’ “This decision in no way reflects on our Shannon employees, who have made an invaluable contribution to our business over many years,” the statement added. A staff meeting with management is due to be held of Molex staff in Shannon at 3pm, amid fears that jobs may be lost. Approximately 510 people are employed by Molex which has been based in Shannon since 1971. The company makes electronic components and laid off 100 staff a decade ago.

In a break from its norm, Shannon Chamber went back to school recently to host its first apprenticeships evening at St Patrick’s Comprehensive in Shannon. The purpose of the evening was to encourage students and their parents to embrace apprenticeships as a career route and to show that there is a way into work that suits students of all aptitudes. Judging by the turnout of over 160, this was an event that touched the hearts and minds of all. The buzz in the auditorium, after the presentations by the five participating companies, pointed to a keen interest by attendees to find out more about the apprenticeship schemes run by Molex, Modular Automation, Element Six, Lufthansa Technik Shannon and Atlantic Aviation Group. The fact that most presentations were given by employees, who had practical experience of being an apprentice, added greatly to the value of the event.
