106 Clancy relatives sign petition against Sinn Féin using his name

WITH the row over the naming of the Ennis Sinn Féin cumann continuing, over 100 relatives of Peadar Clancy have signed a petition requesting that his name not be linked to any political party. The Ennis cumann is named after Peadar Clancy (the Cranny man killed while in custody at Dublin Castle during the War of Independence) and Mairead Farrell (the Provisional IRA member shot dead by British soldiers at Gibraltar in 1988). This week Michael Neylon, a grand nephew of Clancy’s said that many of the family are opposed to his name being used by a political party. “One hundred and six people have signed, that’s between grand nieces, grand nephews, great grand nieces and great grand nephews. That’s what makes up that number.” He said that many of those who have signed are from Clare, where nine families have links to Clancy. Mr Neylon said that those who signed were very happy to do so. “They had no …

Clare looking to banish any further U20 hoodoos

Eoin Brennan looks ahead to the Munster Under 20 Football Championship Semi-Final between Clare v Kerry at Hennessy Memorial Park Miltown Malbay Having already emphatically brushed aside one hoodoo by bridging a 26-year gap to their last victory over Tipperary at this grade, Clare have an opportunity at exorcising two more significant ghosts when hosting Kerry at the penultimate stage back in Miltown Malbay this Monday evening. After all, Kerry, along with annexing eight of the last nine provincial minor crowns, are also joint top of the Under 20 (formally Under 21) roll of honour with 28 titles. It’s a task that Clare will relish though, hitting the ground …

Clubs row back on Laois boycott

THE managers of the last two county senior football champions have confirmed to The Clare Champion that withdrawing county players from Saturday’s All-Ireland qualifier against Laois was a live option. County champions and Cusack Cup holders, Kilmurry-Ibrickane, along with their neighbours, St Joseph’s Miltown, are furious that Clare County Board imposed a €200 fine on them and handed the points to O’Curry’s and Doonbeg respectively, after Cusack Cup fixtures were not played on the weekend of June 3. Clondegad and Éire Óg have also suffered a similar fate, with the points awarded to Lissycasey and St Breckan’s. All four fined clubs had refused to line-out without their inter-county footballers in the sixth round of the Cusack and Garry cups. “We are very upset over it. We got a lot of support from the county players but we felt that the nuclear option wasn’t feasible after all the hard work these guys have put in and their long years of service,” …
