A man in his 20’s has died and a woman is in a serious condition in hospital following a single vehicle crash in Meelick earlier today. The incident occurred at around 4am at Woodcock Hill. It is understood the driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree. The male driver of the car was seriously injured and pronounced dead at the scene. His body was removed to University Hospital Limerick. The female passenger, aged 25, was injured and taken to University Hospital Limerick with what gardai say were serious injuries. The road has been closed to facilitate a Forensic collision examination and local diversions are in place.   Gardaí in Mayorstone, Limerick are investigating the single vehicle fatal road traffic collision andare appealing for witnesses to contact 061 456980, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.

The Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA), along with ICMSA, this morning (Wednesday) mounted a protest at the Regional Veterinary Laboratory in Knockalisheen, Meelick over the possible closure of the facility. The protest was scheduled to coincide with a trip to lab by a review group from the Department of Agriculture and was led by ICSA general secretary Eddie Punch and rural development chairman Seamus Sherlock. Speaking at the protest, the ICSA general secretary said, “This proposal makes no sense at all. The lab is a vital resource with helping farmers determine the cause of mortality and with helping them get on top of infectious diseases another animal health issues as soon as possible. Closing it down will have a huge detrimental effect on animal health and welfare. It will also hinder farmers efforts to be more efficient in reducing mortality. THE Clare footballers will play their first competitive match of the new season when they meet Waterford in Meelick at 2pm on Sunday in the McGrath Cup. Next Wednesday, Clare will play Limerick at 7.30pm in the Gaelic Grounds in their final game in the three-team group. The group winners will play Kerry, Cork or Tipperary in the final on January 22. On Sunday, Clare will be without their Ballyea players, who are preparing for their All-Ireland Club Hurling Championship semi-final, against St Thomas’ from Galway, on Saturday, February 4. The county footballers will play Derry away the following day in their opening Division 2 league fixture. Clare manager Colm Collins said they will use the McGrath Cup to give a game to as many players as possible. DONNAH Vuma has been living in the Knockalisheen Direct Provision Centre, Meelick since September 2014 and is nearing her third Christmas at the facility, which houses approximately 300 asylum seekers. The Zimbabwean woman lives there with her three children, aged 12, eight and six. The two youngest children attend Meelick National School, while the oldest is in first year at secondary school in Limerick. Donnah is not looking forward to Christmas. In fact, December 25 is one of her least enjoyable days. “I’d say it’s gloomier than any other day. Personally, there is nothing that I get the children. I don’t want to lie. MEELICK GAA club have appealed to the Clare County Board for the postponement of Sunday’s junior A football county final. Meelick are due to play Kilmurry Ibrickane in the final. However they have five members of the Clonlara senior hurling panel in their starting 15 who are preparing for the county final replay the following weekend. The players are Oisin O’Brien, Cillian Fennessy, James Hastings, Shane O’Brien and Garrett Kennedy. Clonara are also down to play a Clare Cup game this Saturday. Meelick manager Pat O’Rourke confirmed this afternoon that his club are appealing to Clare GAA on player welfare grounds. “We’re looking to have Sunday’s junior A football final postponed to a future date in which Clonlara are not involved in hurling. We have gone to the county board with that. They are making fixtures this (Monday) evening. Irish Water has dampened claims about water discolouration in the South East Clare area saying there are no issues with water quality. Councillor Cathal Crowe had requested Irish Water to test the quality of water coming into homes in South-East Clare from the Castletroy Reservoir in Limerick, following complaints about discolouration. Several thousand residents’ water is piped through Limerick City to homes in Meelick, Parteen, Ardnacrusha, Westbury, Shannon Banks, Carraig Midhe and parts of Cratloe. According to Councillor Crowe, residents have complained of discolouration in the water for the past few months. “I saw this discolouration in my own tap water on Tuesday, December 29. There was a yellow tinge to the water as it flowed and it took some time for the dirty sediments in the water to fully settle. I poured a glass of bottled spring water to compare and contrast the two – the difference was very obvious. “With a lot of the administrative staff in Irish Water on …

A MEELICK doctor has scooped a major honour awarded by the University of Limerick (UL) Graduate Entry Medical School. Dr Dermot Murphy, a native of Old Cratloe Road, Meelick and a recent graduate of the UL Graduate Entry Medical School, has been presented with the inaugural O’Higgins Medal at University Hospital Limerick (UHL). Dr Murphy has just commenced his intern year at UHL and is looking forward to working with the medical and surgical teams there. He will commence his work in the areas of general and vascular surgery. The award is supported by Professor Niall O’Higgins, chairman of the Board of UL Hospitals. It was approved and supported by the UL Hospitals’ chief academic officer and foundation head of the Graduate Entry Medical School, Professor Paul Finucane and the UL authorities at the Graduate Entry Medical School.
