The switching on of the Ennis Christmas lights at the Christmas tree in the Market this evening (Friday) has been brought forward  to 4.15pm. Clare County Council says the move is out of respect for a funeral taking place at Kennedy’s Funeral Home from 5.00pm. The Mayor of Ennis Municipal District, Johnny Flynn, will perform the official switch-on, while entertainment will be provided by the Holy Family School Choir and local theatrical group, Pantaloons. In conjunction with the switch-on of the Christmas lights, Ennis Lions Club will launch their Yellow Ribbon project in aid of Cahercalla Hospice. Meanwhile, a parking incentive scheme aimed at promoting Christmas and New Year shopping in Ennis comes into force tomorrow. Free parking will be applicable to the town’s 759 off-street and 783 on-street public car parking spaces up to 12pm daily from Saturday, November 29 to January 4 inclusive. There will also be free all-day parking at Cloughleigh car park.

Clare Immigrant Support Centre and Polish sports activists have organised an “anti discrimination” mini football tournament in Ennis on Saturday. At Clare Leisure World, Drumbiggle, local footballers can join the thousands of others worldwide to use the power of football to present a unified stand against discrimination, as part of Football People Action Weeks 2014. The FARE (Football Against Racism Europe) action weeks brings together groups of all sizes in over 50 countries to counter discrimination and celebrate diversity through the game. The FAI has run several events in the past weeks in Clare, as part of the Football People movement. On Saturday,  between 2 and 5pm, six teams with players from many different backgrounds will play on the astro-turf pitches followed by refreshments after the tournament for everyone to enjoy. OVER €150,000 was spent on campaigning by the 58 candidates who contested the Clare County Council election last May. According to figures obtained by The Clare Champion, the 28 new county councillors spent a total of €87,434, while 30 candidates who did not secure election incurred expenses totalling €66,985, giving a total of €154,419. The newly-elected Mayor of Ennis, Johnny Flynn, topped the list with a figure of €5,204, of which €3,811 came from his own resources and €1,392 was spent by Clare Fine Gael. It included €1,946 on adverstising, €1,464 on election posters and €1,417 on other election promotional literature. He was closely followed by former Ennis Town Councillor, Frankie Neylon, who spent €5,200, which included €2,000 on advertising, €1,000 on publicity and other election material, €500 on transport and another €1,000 on his campaign workers. Fine Gael councillor, Johnny Flynn is the new Mayor of Ennis.  He was elected to the position at the inaugural meeting of the Ennis Municipal District on Tuesday afternoon. While the position of mayor has been abolished in most towns, it can be retained in towns where the population is in excesss of  20,000. The other council members in the Ennis area include Mary Howard and Paul Murphy of Fine Gael, Tom McNamara, Pat Daly and Clare Colleran of Fianna Fáil and Independents, James Breen and Ann Norton. Councillor James Breen was elected as deputy mayor on the proposal of Councillor Tom McNamara and seconded by Councillor Pat Daly. Mayor Flynn said he was “proud” to be elected as the new mayor for the newly aligned municipal district and said he would be “impartial” and treat its members with respect throughout his term.
