End of an era for Ennis institution as Mary shuts up shop

MARY Kelly’s shop has been part of the landscape of O’Connell Street in Ennis for decades, but she will close its doors for the last time on Friday.  “I started here exactly 40 years ago on Saturday and I’m closing this Friday. I did it quickly because once the sale went through last Wednesday I said there was no point in dragging it out for a whole month,” she told the Clare Champion this week.  Much of her life has been spent running the landmark business, and she says she has loved it. “I had the best of times, the best of times. Snail mail take 45 years to reach Ennis

ENNIS businesswoman Mary Kelly, who operates a stationery and card shop on O’Connell Street, was rather surprised last week when a letter posted in Dublin 45 years ago dropped through her letterbox. The letter was addressed to the late Philip Reidy, the former owner of the premises. Along with his wife, Agnes Henchy Reidy, he ran a newsagency business from the building. Mr Reidy passed away in 1977. “The envelope was perfectly intact and the address was written in a nice fountain pen. The postal mark was April 7, 1971,” Mary told The Clare Champion. “I didn’t open it because there is a son of that man living in Celbridge. He said to me ‘open it’ but I said ‘no, no you have to open it’. It felt like it could have been a relic or a ten shilling note,” Mary mused. Ennis woman dies following Darragh crash

An Ennis woman in her 80s has died in hospital following a car crash which occurred last week. Mary Kelly from College Green in Ennis was involved in a road traffic collision with another car on the Ennis to Kilrush Road  at Darragh on the evening of July 21 last. Ms Kelly died on Friday July 25 in hospital. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday morning. Ennis gardai  are investigating the crash and anyone with information is asked to contact them on 065-6848100.
