THE late Ashling Murphy will be remembered by her alma mater, Mary Immaculate College (MIC), as it teams up with the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO) to offer a new entrance scholarship in her honour. The Ashling Murphy Scholarship was launched at the INTO Education Conference at the Tullamore Court Hotel recently. Ashling, from County Offaly, had graduated as a primary teacher from Mary I just three months before she was tragically killed. The scholarship will be jointly awarded by MIC and the INTO to the amount of €4,000. It will be a bursary awarded to a First Year Bachelor of Education (Primary Teaching) student for their exceptional achievement and talent in the field of traditional Irish music. Speaking at the announcement of the scholarship, Professor Eugene Wall, President of the college, said: “In launching this scholarship, we will continue to cherish Ashling’s memory and her many accomplishments, her love of music and her skills as an educator. CLARE hurler Diarmuid Ryan has been awarded an MIC GPA Sports Scholarship for the coming academic year, in recognition of his sporting achievements.  Now in its second year, the MIC GPA Scholarship scheme is a collaboration between Mary Immaculate College (MIC) and the Gaelic Players Association (GPA), and is open to GPA members who have applied for and are successful in securing a place on MIC’s postgraduate programmes in education and the liberal arts. Two scholarships are offered on an annual basis. Limerick camogie player Caoimhe Costelloe has also been awarded a scholarship. Diarmuid Ryan is a first year Professional Master of Education (Primary Teaching) student at MIC. The Cratloe clubman has played inter-county hurling for the Banner since 2017 and is nominated for an All Star award for his performance in Clare’s All-Ireland Championship campaign this year, where they reached the Semi-Final stages. A TULLA lecturer has been awarded one of just two publication scholarships by the Royal Irish Academy. Dr Eilís Ní Dheá, who is a lecturer in the Department of Language and Literary Education at Mary Immaculate College (MIC), has secured a Publication Scholarship by the Royal Irish Academy. This prestigious scholarship was one of just two to be awarded nationally following a public competition open to all lecturers in academic Irish throughout the country. It will allow Dr Ní Dheá to devote her time to the completion of her new book entitled, “Saothrú an Léinn Ghaelaigh i gCo. an Chláir”, The Gaelic Manuscript Tradition of Co. Clare 1700 – 1900. The awarding committee, under the chairpersonship of Professor Ciarán Mac Murchaidh from Dublin City University (DCU), were unanimous in their decision to grant Dr Ní Dheá this scholarship having been “extremely impressed with the standard, scope and substance” of her publication project.
