Marty all set to glide on the dance floor

BETTER known nationally for his skill behind the microphone, Marty Morrissey will show the nation his best moves from Sunday evening, when Dancing with the Stars returns to RTÉ One at 6.30pm. Locally, Marty has been spotted jovially jiving in celebration of a Kilmurry-Ibrickane championship win but, this time, the entire country will be keeping an eye on the Mullagh man. “My first dance on Sunday is the quick step. It’s very much about the frame. There are brain cells being used for the first time in 20 years, trying to remember ‘what the hell happens here’,” he laughed, when speaking to The Clare Champion this week. As show time approaches, Marty has started to dwell on what he has got himself into. “At this stage, nerves are jangling a bit. I remember when I eventually said to RTÉ that I would do it, I was heading to Australia so it seemed like an eternity away. But now it’s on …

’95 All-Ireland, a vivid journey for Marty

TWENTY years ago, September 3, 1995, Marty Morrissey carried out one of the shorter but more dramatic interviews of his career. With Clare were trailing Offaly in the All-Ireland final, he approached a tightly-wound Ger Loughnane as he came back onto the field for the second half. After some preliminaries, the Mullagh man asked the Feakle man, ‘Do you think you’re going to do it?’ With absolutely certainty and burning intensity Loughnane responded “We’re going to do it”. Twenty years on, managers never speak to reporters between the throw-in and the final whistle but, at that time, it happened in virtually every live match at half-time. Marty says he’d like to see it coming back. “I think it’s an awful pity to be honest with you. When there’s hundreds of thousands watching, or millions on All-Ireland final day around the world, every little bit contributes to a unique occasion. It’s something I’d love to see reintroduced, but I have my …

Fitzy helps Noah achieve his goals

Clare hurling boss, Davy Fitzgerald took a break from mentoring his players recently to help young Noah Sheedy from Ogonnelloe achieved his goal by overcoming literacy issues. Davy challenged 12-year-old Noah, from Bealkelly to commentate on the recent Clare and Dublin hurling game in Cusack Park for broadcast on the RTÉ One series, The Family Project, to help him develop his confidence and focus to defeat educational issues that affect his life. Noah is about to start secondary school and has difficulty maintaining attention and seeing projects through to the end. To combat this, Davy worked with parents, Paschal and Vanessa to devise a commentary challenge for Noah to complete, which encouraged him to stay focused and realise the importance of taking a project through the various stages to completion. With a little guidance along the way from legendary broadcasters Michéal O’Muircheartaigh and Marty Morrissey, Noah studied the players and statistics and attempted to commentate on the live inter-county hurling …
