Ennis woman nominated as judge

Ennis solicitor, Marie Keane has been nominated by the Government for appointment by the President as a judge to the District Court. He appointment, along with that of Mr John King, arise from the elevation to the Circuit Court of His Hon. Judge Eugene O’Kelly and the recent retirement of Judge Eamon O’Brien on 24 January 2015. A partner in the firm of [John] Callinan Keane; after her early education,Marie studied at the National University of Ireland, Galway, qualifying with a BA (1988) and LLB (1991), and the Law Society – Solicitors Professional Course in 1994. She also has qualifications in commercial property, mental health law and in mediation and alternative dispute resolution. She is a member of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society, a founding member of the Family Law Mediation Group and a member of the panel for the Mental Health Commission. District court president in Ennis

By Nicola Corless THE president of the district court sat in Clare for just the second time in the State’s history last week. Judge Rosemary Horgan presided over Family Law sittings on Thursday and Friday on the invitation of local district court Judge Patrick Durcan. Clare’s family law lists are notoriously long, with as many as 60 cases listed to be heard in one day. Last year, in addition to the two scheduled family law sittings each month, 17 special sittings had to be held here, presided over by visiting judges, in an attempt to deal with the backlog of cases. Marie Keane of Callinan Keane Solicitors explained the significance of the visit. “This is just the second time ever a President of the District Court has come to sit in Clare. €408,000 hospital security for brain-damaged man

By Dan Danaher A BRAIN-damaged, assault victim requires 24-hour security at Ennis hospital psychiatric unit, at a cost of €408,000 last year, it has emerged. Health authorities have not responded to Care Champion queries about the six-year delay in providing an appropriate high secure facility for the 31-year-old man suffering from organic brain syndrome following a serious assault. Solicitor Marie Keane said this week that her client is inappropriately placed as an involuntary psychiatric patient in the high observation unit of the acute psychiatric unit at Ennis Hospital since February 2008. He is not a psychiatric patient. She has called on the Department of Health to fast track the provision of a proper small residential facility for patients suffering from frontal lobe injury that affects affect their comprehension and can result in unpredictable and sometimes unintentional violent behaviour.
