180 job losses expected following Lufthansa Technik sale to AAG

SOURCES have this morning said that 180 jobs will be shed at Lufthansa Technik Shannon, following its acquisition by Atlantic Aviation Group. It is also understood that an existing hangar at its premises will not be operated by the company following the sale. While news of the transaction has been welcomed in some quarters this morning, there will be significant job losses, and it is understood that there is a lot of uncertainty facing staff following a briefing they were given by their employer earlier today. Clare TD Michael McNamara said clarification is needed on the future of all existing full-time jobs at Lufthansa Technik Shannon as well as the retention of the two existing aviation hangars in Shannon. Mr McNamara said he would be seeking answers from management of Lufthansa Technik Shannon Ltd and Atlantic Aviation Group when he attends a briefing on the acquisition tomorrow morning. Atlantic Aviation Group acquires Lufthansa Technik Shannon

LOCAL company Atlantic Aviation Group (AAG) announced today that it has acquired Lufthansa Technik Shannon. The future of Lufthansa Technik Shannon had been in doubt for a number of months as a strategic review of the business was ongoing, which was followed by a sale process. It is not immediately clear what impact there will be on jobs in Shannon. While AAG released a statement this morning in which it stated that 300 Lufthansa Technik Staff would be joining AAG, there were 505 people working there in 2020. In this morning’s statement AAG said the deal “will bring AAG’s total workforce to approximately 740 people across sites in Shannon and Brize Norton in the UK. For the remainder of 2021, both companies will focus on transition planning with the aim to have a smooth integration in early 2022. The deal is subject to approval from the LHT Supervisory Board, and the terms of the sale will remain confidential.” It claimed …

Job losses expected at Lufthansa Technik

STAFF at Shannon company Lufthansa Technik are due to be briefed on plans for its future this morning. Sources this morning say that it is expected it will be sold to another local company. While the majority of the jobs are set to be retained, it is expected that there will be around 140 lay offs. The company has been undergoing a strategic review in recent months, looking at options including the sale of the plant and its potential closure. Going by the company’s 2020 annual report, it employed just over 500 people in Shannon last year.

Optimism over Lufthansa Technik sale

SOURCES say it looks increasingly likely that Lufthansa Technik will be sold, rather than restructured or closed down.  The company are understood to still be in discussions with an interested party, as talks aimed at agreeing a sale continue.  While at one time the company had expected to make a decision on the Shannon plant’s future by mid July, there is still some uncertainty nearly a month later, but there is optimism that the discussions will ultimately bear fruit. Lufthansa Technik Shannon,  employs around 500 people, but has seen its operations hit very hard by the pandemic. It  specialises in the overhaul of short- and medium-range aircraft. The services offered include basic overhauls and annual checks on the Boeing 737 Classic und Next Generation, 757, 767 and MD-80 types and the Airbus A320 family of aircraft.
