Dromoland Castle, one of the top luxury castle hotels in the world, has announced a €20 million renovation programme. The multi-award winning castle hotel’s investment programme has been planned to preserve and perfect the historical building and the 330 acres of surrounding land near Newmarket-on-Fergus. Lord Inchiquin Conor O’Brien has lodged an objection to a planning application by Dromoland Castle Holdings Ltd, who are seeking to bore three wells to service the castle. The company is seeking planning permission for the provision of a new potable water source serving Dromoland Castle. This would consist of three bored wells and ancillary infrastructure, including a sunken storage tank; underground contact tank; service building; pump system and all ancillary site development works. The development is proposed within the grounds of Dromoland Castle, which is a protected structure. In his objection letter to the application, Lord Inchiquin states that the application relates to an extraction of water by borehole from a watersource that extends in a defined channel under his land and which is accordingly subject to a natural right of reservation of that source attaching to his land and forming part thereof. A new Brian Boru Millennium Crown, which is being used as part of a nationwide drive to raise thousands of euro for cancer research, was taken to the birthplace of its namesake this week. The crown, which is part of the Jewels for Cures cancer initiative, was transported from the Hunt Museum for a few stops at historical landmarks connected with Brian Boru in East Clare, by the brainchild of the charity drive, Alison McCormick. Ms McCormick had originally intended to auction the crown but then decided to donate it to the Irish people, as a gift to mark the commemorations marking 1,000 years since Brian Boru’s death at the Battle of Clontarf. This project raises funds for the Cancer Clinical Research Trust (CCRT), which was set up by Professor John Crown in 1997. In an exclusive interview with The Clare Champion, the head of the O’Brien clan, who is the 32nd indirect descent to Brian Ború, issued stinging criticism against Ministers Leo Vradkar and Jimmy Deenihan, claiming the national launch in Trinity College in January came “18 months too late”. During his last meeting with Arts Minister Jimmy Deenihan, the 18th Baron of Inchiquin proposed the Government allocate €150,000 to organise celebrations in Killaloe, Clontarf and Cashel, which could have generated €600,000 for the country if Armagh agreed to contribute a similar amount. However, this proposal wasn’t taken up and instead county groups only received a relatively small amount of funding.
