A decision on whether or not a discount supermarket can be built on the site of Ennistymon Mart is due to be made before St Patrick’s Day. Clare County Council received an application in the past week from John Spain Associates, on behalf of Aldi Stores, for a proposed shop with 82 car-parking spaces on the mart site at Church Hill and Circular Road. The site has been the subject of controversy in recent years, with local farmers fighting to keep the mart open. In December 2014, officers of the Ennistymon branch of Irish Farmers’ Association, in an unprecedented move in the county, resigned their positions. They took the decision to give up their roles in protest over the sale of the mart to Aldi and what they saw as a lack of support from Clare IFA on the matter. Noirín Hegarty may be in the business of world travel as Managing Destination Editor with Lonely Planet but the well-known journalist considers her family’s holiday home in Liscannor her ‘refuge’. Her mother Carmel Vaughan and her father Sean Hegarty hail from the West and North of the county and although reared in Dublin, Noirín spent many happy holidays here as a child visiting her 60 cousins. Not only are her ancestral roots here, it was also in Clare that the seeds of her interest in journalism were planted. “My uncle Martin Vaughan still lives in Miltown Malbay. He was always involved in what was going on in the community. Paddling from Doolin to Liscannor beneath the Cliffs of Moher will be among the challenges along the Wild Atlantic Way highlighted as one of the world’s outdoor activity destinations in a US TV series, Facing Waves. The show is broadcast into eight million US homes through Outside Television’s TV network, which reaches one of the most sought after demographics in the adventure travel world. The episode featuring Ireland will be broadcast early next year to over 50 million homes, as it is syndicated to over 25 other countries. The ‘First Lady’ of stand up paddle fitness, Nikki Gregg from Ohio is currently in Ireland filming with Dave O’Hara of SUPForAll (Sligo) along The Wild Atlantic Way. Filming is concentrated on the Sligo area and the famous Mullaghmore wave; weather permitting filming will also include paddling from Doolin to Liscannor beneath the Cliffs of Moher. Plans for a park and ride facility to serve people going to the Cliffs of Moher have stalled. Clare County Council decided not to extend the period of planning permission for the car park at Liscannor. In July, Lazarus Investments Limited applied to the local authority to extend the permission, which was granted in 2009 and will cease to have effect on January 2, 2015. An initial application was made in May and refused at the end of June. The reasons given for this were disputed by a planning firm, acting on behalf of the Lazarus Investments Ltd, in a letter accompanying the July application. The letter said the applicant received legal advice that the decision was “erroneous, fundamentally flawed and that there are very strong grounds to judicially review the decision”. It went on to say the application was being relodged, to “give the planning authority an opportunity to rectify their apparent errors and to grant planning permission”. Last …

The Central Bank of Ireland has  launched a €15 limited edition silver proof collector coin to commemorate John Philip Holland [1841 – 1914], the Liscannor-born inventor of the modern submarine. The coin features a representative image of the inventor’s hand poised to place the final stroke of a technical drawing of the USS Holland, complete with a decorative nautilus spiral with the obverse bearing the traditional representation of the Irish harp. The coin, which was designed by Mary Gregory, is part of the Irish Science and Inventions coin series, and has an issue limit of 10,000 units. Speaking at the launch at the Marine Institute in Oranmore, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, John Crowe said, “This commemorative coin provides a lasting tribute to an individual whose achievements are celebrated throughout the world. When Agriculture Minister, Simon Coveney visited Liscannor on Sunday to participate in the John P Holland commemorations, he took time out to reassure Clare farmers that the Government is striving to help those who need it. His comment comes and pressure grows on State agencies and Clare County Council to redouble their efforts to assist farmers whose lands were hit by flooding in January and February. Many farmers are living in fear that there will be a repeat of the serious flooding unlesss repairs and restoration works are addressed immediately. Minister Coveney was given a tour of the worst affected arears when he visited Clare shortly after ther storms had abated. Clare IFA Rural Development chairman, Seamus Murphy said they want the county council and the relevant government agencies to ensure the engineer’s report they had commisioned document is acted on before the bad weather returns.

THE Health and Safety Authority (HSA) have begun an investigation into a work place accident in which 38-year-old TJ McDonagh died in Liscannor on Wednesday evening. Gardai said that at around 7.30pm at Kilconnell, Liscannor, a 38 year old man was found unconscious in a shed. He was brought to University Hospital Galway and subsequently pronounced dead. Mr McDonagh will repose at St Brigid’s Church in Liscannor on Friday evening, while funeral mass will be on Saturday at 11am, followed by burial in the Holy Rosary Cemetery in Doolin. As a mark of respect M & M Auto Repairs Ennistymon will remain closed until Monday, August 25.

[doptg id=”38″] It started with just the germ of an idea at a Weight Watchers meeting, where members gather each week to be weighed and to gain encouragement to keep losing weight. One of the members, Shelly Galvin, suggested that a social outing would be a good way to increase morale and fellowship. By the end of the class, the members decided that they would tackle the walk along the Cliffs of Moher, with sponsorship from The Clare Champion. As a result, over 50 Weight Watcher members from classes around the county descended on Liscannor last Saturday to tackle the 18km route. Although the weather forecasts were iffy, the day couldn’t have been better, with blue skies and a cooling breeze coming in from the sea. Spirits were high as the group set off, with a cracking initial pace, despite the sometimes uneven and narrow path. It was wonderful to see the Cliffs from a completely different angle and the views …
