Woman whose teen charges rescued calls for more water safety awareness

INCREASED lifeguard cover is required in Lahinch, according to a mother who had three teenagers rescued from a rip current by surf instructor, Tom Hennessy recently. Barbara Jordan believes Clare County Council and other local authorities need to review the provision of lifeguards in view of the dramatic increase in open water swimming and water based activities throughout the country. “There is no point in increasing cover after a drowning. If water safety is given more exposure, it will save lives. Water safety awareness should be taught in secondary schools. “If a swimmer is caught in a rip current, they should swim parallel to it. There are currents in every beach across the country. “When lifeguards are on duty they can direct swimmers away from rip currents. Lifeguards should be on duty full time from June to September inclusive with weekend cover from April. “Clare Water Safety Association do an amazing job but it is up to the Council to …

Clare Council Urged To Extend Lahinch Lifeguard Cover

CONCERN has been expressed about the lack of full time lifeguards in Lahinch seven days a week following a number of incidents in the sea last week. Ben Bennett of Ben’s Surf Clinic, Lahinch, has revealed eight volunteer lifeguards were involved in a total of 15 rescues and 25 assists last weekend as no Clare County Council lifeguards were rostered at the time. Mr Bennett told the Clare Champion Lahinch was extremely busy last weekends as was like “two Bank Holiday weekends rolled into one”. He explained a lot of people needed assistance in the water on Sunday due to the weather conditions and tides. There were two ambulance emergency call outs in the popular North Clare resort over the weekend including one for a suspected heart attack. Mr Bennett said there were two different incidences of missing children, one child got lost on the beach for about two hours, while a different child was found within 15 minutes. If …

Locals getting squeezed out in North Clare property boom

WITH remote working having changed the property market, the coastal area around Lahinch is seeing a property boom despite the pandemic, with a huge increase in the number of people looking to move to the North Clare area. While it is very good news for those trying to sell property in the area, the strength of the market is seeing landlords sell up, and with a deficit in the stock of property for long-term rental, some people are being forced to leave the area entirely. One local property went on sale for €295,000 recently, but ended up selling for €420,000, illustrating how strong the local market is right now. Ennistymon auctioneer Peri Griffin said that the current market is reminiscent of the Celtic Tiger years. “At the moment supply is low and demand is high. We don’t have a house for everyone, we could have 20 or 30 people after one house and that’s driving prices through the roof.” She …

More Permanent Homes Needed In Lahinch -Cllr Talty

THERE is a pent up demand for the provision of more permanent dwellings for young families in Lahinch, according to a local councillor. Councillor Shane Talty said the big difficulty in the North Clare tourism hot spot is whether any new private housing development will be delivered at an affordable price. Victoria Cross Limited has applied for planning permission to Clare County Council to construct 28 new houses at Station Road, Lahinch. Commenting on this proposed development, Councillor Talty said hopefully these new houses will be priced in a way that ordinary working families can afford them so they can contribute to the local economy throughout the year and provide children for the local schools. “There is a need for new housing but it is a matter for the local planning authority to ensure there is a planning condition that stipulates they will be for sale for permanent occupancy. The most recent development that was granted planning permission in Lahinch …
