Concerns over €3m Lahinch repair works

Clare County Council has moved to smooth the waters in relation to visual concerns concerning the proposed completion of Lahinch coastal repair works, costing in the region of €3 million. The development comprises of repair works to the existing sea walls and access steps, a new 330m rock revetment structure along the length of the existing sea defences and revised surfacewater management proposals for the N67 national secondary road that would discharge to an outfall within the new rock armour protection. Four surprises on Lahinch farm

Well-known North Clare farmer, Tom Clair, certainly had his hands full after checking to see his cow calving on his farm at Maghrea, Lahinch this week. “I checked her at 1.30am on Sunday and nothing was happening but when I returned at lunch-time on Sunday, I could not believe my eyes. She had two calves standing in front of her, there was one behind and, to my amazement, a fourth had made its way out of the building.” The mother is a Hereford cross and the four healthy charolais heifer calves are identical in weight and colour and are by a pure-bred Devon Cottage charolais bull. Tom has named them Rosie, Fluffy, Mia and Jennie. “I will keep them on the farm until they die,” he said. It is believed that the odds of a cow having quadruplets with all calves born alive are 11.2 million to one.

Christmas Day to ring out across Europe

SHANNON singer/songwriter David Hope has a new seasonal release, Christmas Day, which will be heard all around Europe in the coming days. The song takes up the common theme of struggling to get home to loved ones for Christmas, with a rather robust pop-oriented sound. It comes with a funny and entertaining video, which was shot in Lahinch. Christmas Day was chosen as the RTÉ Radio One song, selected for the European Broadcasting Union Christmas Music Project and will feature on a playlist across all member states. The single will also feature on RTÉ Radio One’s Christmas Playlist 2016 and a number of stations in Germany and Austria. David says, “I suppose I didn’t intentionally sit down and write a Christmas song; it just kind of happened that way. The song kind of led me to write it and I kind of went with it. It kind of took on a life of its own really. It took a turn …

Go ahead for Lahinch Pro protection works

Business and community leaders in Lahinch breathed a collective sigh of relief this week, following the green light for €2.85m of major coastal protection works for the promenade area of Lahinch seafront. The long wait for the start of this work, which will be fully funded through the OPW and will be undertaken under the auspices of Clare County Council, is now over. It includes the addition of extensive rock armour storm defence to the existing structure, a new concrete apron in front of the current seawall, refurbishment of existing steps and ramped access to the beach, along with development of a new universally accessible ramp at the north end of the promenade. In a recent council briefing document for councillors, the council acknowledged that the existing sea wall and boulder protection along the promenade have proven to be inadequate to prevent wave action overtopping the structure during extreme storm events. This has led to extreme flooding in the car …

Clare’s coastline from the sky

A NEW photo book, Clare’s Wild Atlantic Way – An Aerial Perspective of County Clare’s Extraordinary Coastline, has just been published and contains photographs from the full length of Clare’s coast, from New Quay in the north of the county down to Loop Head, and all along the Shannon Estuary, as far inland as the airport. The book is by Patrick G Ryan, who was living in Miltown Malbay until his death, just a few weeks ago. His friend Ann O’Connell explained, “This was a project that he started about four or five years ago. His father was a pilot here in Miltown Malbay and Patrick would have done a lot of flying with him. His father passed away from bowel cancer and Patrick decided to put this book together in memory of his father and to donate the proceeds to Cahercalla Hospice. That was the journey he went on and, unfortunately, he succumbed to the same fate as his …
