AHEAD of the 2019 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at Lahinch Golf Club in July, an open day for members of the public will take place at the Lahinch Coast Hotel on Sunday (April 7th) from midday to 4pm. Representatives from The European Tour, Lahinch Golf Club, Clare County Council, An Garda Síochána, HSE, Dubai Duty Free and Fáilte Ireland will be present to outline their preparations for the most prestigious event on the Irish golfing calendar from July 3-7. Organisers will be available to answer queries on a range of topics, including traffic management arrangements, the Site Plan, and how Lahinch and the wider county will benefit from the event. Meanwhile, a new website dedicated to promoting Lahinch and surrounding areas in the lead up to, during and after the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open will also be launched. THE substantial shadow of the man who is not there will not damage the Irish Open. That’s the firm view of host Paul McGinley but he admits that Rory McIlroy is a major loss from the field at Lahinch. “I’m still very disappointed. He’s one of the top players in the world, he’s Irish and he’s chosen this year to sit out the Irish Open, which is a huge disappointment for everyone; you’ve got to be honest and open about it. But, you know what, the Irish Open isn’t going to be defined by whether Rory McIlroy plays or not. The Irish Open has been in the schedule for a great number of years, with some great champions like Seve Ballesteros, Olazábal, Bernhard Langer; Rory’s won it himself. PRESIDENT Michael D Higgins has expressed his sadness at the death of 39 year old Lahinch man, Michael Ryan who was a passenger on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, which crashed on Sunday morning. All 157 people on the flight have died. Passengers from 33 countries were on board. Mr Ryan was from Attychristoria, Lahinch and worked with The United Nations World Food Programme. He lived in Cork with his wife and two children. The family were due to move to Rome in the coming weeks. “As President of Ireland may I express my deep sadness for the tragic loss of so many lives in the air crash in Ethiopia and may I convey the deepest sympathy of the Irish people to all the families and communities affected. This tragedy affects so many, with passengers from more than 30 countries and from several international organisations on board the flight,” President Higgins said. “In particular I wish …

THE European Tour has confirmed that English golfers, Lee Westwood and Danny Willett, will take part in the 2019 Dubai Duty Free Irish Open from July 4 to 7. Willett won the US Masters in 2016 while Westwood is a former world number one, who has won 24 European tour titles. Another English golfer, Tommy Fleetwood, will also compete as they seek to become the first English winners since Paul Casey in 2013. “Lahinch is somewhere I’ve never played, although I’ve heard a lot about it and how good it is. It’s obviously a good links course and with The Open coming up a couple of weeks after it, it will be good preparation,” Westwood told europeantour.com “To be down in Lahinch and then a couple of weeks later up at Portrush, we’re going to have a few fantastic weeks there with crowds that know golf, know the game and I know they’ll come out in force,” Willett commented.  

RORY McIlroy has said he will not play at the Irish Open in Lahinch this summer. He has said he will not be playing there, because he will be focusing on the British Open in Portrush. Speaking to BBC Northern Ireland he said, “If there is ever a year when I feel I can miss this Irish Open, it’s this year. If I was to play the Irish Open, The Open Championship would be my third event in a row. For me, that’s not the best way to prepare for what could be the biggest event of my life.”

A MAN cleaning out a shed made a historical but dangerous discovery on Friday in Lahinch, coming across an old grenade which was left there. It is understood that the shed is on the grounds of a house on Station Road, which recently changed hands. Following the discovery Gardai were alerted, and neighbours were evacuated from their homes for a number of hours. The device was subsequently brought to the grounds of Ennistymon GAA Club, where a controlled explosion was carried out on Saturday. Speaking to the Clare Champion, local County Councillor Bill Slattery said he had spoken to people in the Station Road area who he said had been shocked at having to leave their homes in such circumstances.
