THE managers of the last two county senior football champions have confirmed to The Clare Champion that withdrawing county players from Saturday’s All-Ireland qualifier against Laois was a live option. County champions and Cusack Cup holders, Kilmurry-Ibrickane, along with their neighbours, St Joseph’s Miltown, are furious that Clare County Board imposed a €200 fine on them and handed the points to O’Curry’s and Doonbeg respectively, after Cusack Cup fixtures were not played on the weekend of June 3. Clondegad and Éire Óg have also suffered a similar fate, with the points awarded to Lissycasey and St Breckan’s. All four fined clubs had refused to line-out without their inter-county footballers in the sixth round of the Cusack and Garry cups. “We are very upset over it. We got a lot of support from the county players but we felt that the nuclear option wasn’t feasible after all the hard work these guys have put in and their long years of service,” …

CLARE County Council’s decision last Friday to grant planning permission to Brookfield Renewable Ireland Ltd for 11 wind turbines, will mean that a total of 98 turbines will be located within a 10km radius in Connolly, Kilmurry-Ibrickane, Lissycasey and Kilmihil. Up to 131m in height, permission was given subject to 27 conditions. Fifty six separate submissions were received by the council, with 53 of them listed as objections from local residents and community groups. In a detailed submission, the Conserve Kilmaley Group outlined its concerns with the latest windfarm, noting that almost 100 wind turbines would be located in the area, if granted permission. “This combined development is a very substantial windfarm in terms of site area, scale and height of turbines, capacity of output, noise emissions and enormous local disturbance to the environment – peat disposal, tree felling, loss of moorland and bog habitat, impact on all species and impacts on residents and their dwellings,” were amongst some of …

Kilmurry Ibrickane 2-9 Doonbeg 1-8 THE mid Winter evening of December 9, 2016 will be fondly remembered in the history of Kilmurry Ibrickane GAA club. Last Friday in Kilmihil, Kilmurry added their sixth successive Cusack Cup to the senior championship and U/21 titles already won. That they did so was largely thanks to 1-2 from play, all in the second half, from centre back Martin McMahon. Interestingly, while McMahon was definitely the most influential player on view, he was challenged for player of the match by second half substitute Declan Callinan, who won several breaks, in the Kilmurry half back line. Kilmurry played their best football in the second half, having been out played for much of the opening half hour. Doonbeg led 1-3 to 0-4 at half-time but they were dealt a huge blow five minutes before the interval, when Colm Dillon was black carded for a late shoulder on Ciaran Morrissey. SIXTEEN days before Christmas Day and nine months after the Cusack Cup started on March 19, the league, which consists of seven rounds before the top three are finalised, will conclude in Kilmihil on Friday evening. When referee John Hannon throws the ball in for the 2016 final, two fierce rivals will shorten the winter’s evening as they go in search of the cup, €2,000 in prize money for the victors from The Clare Champion and a winning conclusion to their footballing year. Kilmurry are seeking an unprecedented six in-a-row, a feat never achieved by any club. Kilmurry have won 10 Cusack Cups up to now, while Doonbeg have 14 on the sideboard but none since 1994. Kilmurry have enjoyed a superb year, winning their 14th senior championship and 13th U-21 title, while their minors and juniors also reached their respective county finals. Kilmurry Ibrickane will host Dr Crokes from Killarney in Quilty at 1pm on Sunday in the Munster club Football Championship quarter-final, a repeat of similar fixtures in 2011 and 2012. Beaten 0-12 to 0-9 five years ago, Kilmurry were very unlucky to lose 2-8 to 0-13 just 12 months later in West Clare, largely thanks to two superb saves from Crokes goalkeeper David Moloney. At one stage the Kerry club led by eight points but Kilmurry battled their way back manfully. On October 16, Crokes defeated Kenmare District by 2-16 to 1-12 in the Kerry county final, setting up this tie against the Clare champions. “We’ll enjoy tonight and Monday but we intend to get back preparing for Sunday fairly quickly. “We have a small bit of history with Dr Crokes over a few years. Kilmurry Ibrickane 2-13 Cratloe 0-6 OUTSCORING Cratloe 2-7 to 0-2 in the second half, Kilmurry Ibrickane eased to their first senior championship title since 2012 and their 14th in total in Sunday’s Clare county football final replay in Cusack Park, Ennis. Martin McMahon’s goal, nine minutes into the second half, was the games decisive score, putting Kilmurry into a 1-7 to 0-4 lead. That was Kilmurry’s first county final goal since their 2004 replay win over Éire Óg. On Sunday, Kilmurry led 0-6 to 0-4 at half-time following a first half which featured both sides defending in numbers, when they didn’t have possession. The key contributor in that half was Kilmurry full forward Peter O’Dwyer who started this time, having been introduced as a late substitute in the drawn game. O’Dwyer kicked a good point and was directly involved in two more of Kilmurry’s first half points. Kilmurry largely rely on a possession based support game but O’Dwyer provided them …

MEELICK GAA club have appealed to the Clare County Board for the postponement of Sunday’s junior A football county final. Meelick are due to play Kilmurry Ibrickane in the final. However they have five members of the Clonlara senior hurling panel in their starting 15 who are preparing for the county final replay the following weekend. The players are Oisin O’Brien, Cillian Fennessy, James Hastings, Shane O’Brien and Garrett Kennedy. Clonara are also down to play a Clare Cup game this Saturday. Meelick manager Pat O’Rourke confirmed this afternoon that his club are appealing to Clare GAA on player welfare grounds. “We’re looking to have Sunday’s junior A football final postponed to a future date in which Clonlara are not involved in hurling. We have gone to the county board with that. They are making fixtures this (Monday) evening. Cratloe 1-9 Kilmurry Ibrickane 0-12 CRATLOE’S Cathal McInerney showed his class and composure when he steered over an injury time equalising point, to rescue a draw for his side and ensure a replay on Saturday or Sunday week in the 2016 Clare senior football final. The last drawn county final was in 2003 when Kilkee beat Kilrush in the replay. McInerney steered over the equaliser following a foul on Cratloe’s John Galvin, who was one of two players yellow carded following a brawl at the end of the first half. The incident happened as both sets of players were returning to their dressing rooms, through the communal tunnel. The respective dressing room doors, which lead directly to the field, were locked, therefore both teams had to use the tunnel. Before the second half started, referee Rory Hickey yellow carded Galvin and Kilmurry’s Mark McCarthy, while he showed a straight red card to unused Kilmurry substitute John Willie Sexton for his …
