Junior leagues at knockout stage

The way is clear for the semi-finals of the junior A hurling league (division 4) and both games will be played next Sunday (July 3). Broadford have finished on top of the league table after the completed their  programme of games with victory over St. Josephs, Doora-Barefield. Ballyea finished in second place thanks to a comfortable win over Tubber this Saturday evening. Despite going down to O’Callaghans Mills, Meelick remain in third spot with the Mills filling the final play off position. In next week’s semi-finals Broadford will play O’Callaghans Mills while Ballyea will face Meelick. Meanwhile, in the junior B hurling league (division 5), Newmarket and Wolfe Tones 1 have qualified from division 5 A, Parteen are through from division 5 B while the qualifier from division 5 C will be confirmed after Wolfe Tones 2 play Broadford on Tuesday. Division 5 title for Killimer

The first of the season’s adult GAA competitions concluded when Killimer defeated Kilmurry-Ibrickane to capture the division 5 football title at Doonbeg. In doing so they avenged a one point defeat suffered in the opening round. The new champions showed a lot of improvement throughout the league and were convincing winners of the title when they scored a 2-15 to 0-8 success Elsewhere a number of the domestic leagues moved closer to conclusion. Kilmihil will play O’Currys for the division 6 football title this weekend after they managed a one point win over Ml. Cusacks. In the division 3 football league, Corofin sealed a place in the final and promotion to division 2 for next season when they recorded a 0-11 to 0-6 win over Coolmeen on Sunday. Way is clear for league semi-finals

The way is clear for the semi-finals of the division 3 and 4 hurling leagues following the final round of group games on Friday and Saturday evenings. A number of play off places in some of the football leagues have also been filled this weekend while the way is clear for the first league final of the season with Killimer through to play Kilmurry-Ibrickane in division 5 thanks to their eight point win over neighbours Kilrush on Friday evening. A one point win for Ml. Cusacks over St. Breckans has given the Carron based club a place in the division 6 league semi-final where they will play Kilmihil on Sunday next with the winners going through to play O’Currys in the final. Meanwhile, Corofin booked a place in the division 3 league play offs with a hard earned two point win over Lissycasey on Friday evening. Susan returns to Killimer for burial

THE late Susan Clark made her final trip home to her eternal resting place on July 4 last. A native of Killimer, 100-year old Susan was laid to rest in Burrane graveyard alongside her parents. She emigrated to England 78 years ago to find work as a seamstress. Susan featured in The Scattering, a book which traced 78 Clare emigrants and sent a group of photographers, including The Clare Champion’s John Kelly, to photograph them in their adopted homes. The Scattering was launched in 2000 by the late President Hillery. Kilkee Community College school teacher Sister Mary O’Connell was Susan Clark’s niece and was among the extended family at the funeral in Killimer. “Susan had talked about being buried with her mother and father in Burrane. When we’d go to see her the fact that we were Marty’s (Susan’s brother) children always focused her mind. She’d ask for all of the neighbours down along, one after the other,” Sister Mary …

Sarah Jane in Miss Ireland final

Sarah Jane Dunne, a daughter of the famous late Pecker Dunne from Killimer, has qualified for the Miss Ireland finals, which will take place on Saturday, July 19. She is the first member of the Travelling community to be selected as a finalist for Miss Ireland, a competition, which has a 67-year history. Speaking about her qualification for the finals, the 24-year-old said it came about after she entered a radio competition. “I was in a competition that Ryan Tubridy had on 2FM, Miss Personality, basically nobody knew what we looked like when we entered that competition. We just filled out application forms with all our details and then they picked eight finalists, who they thought were interesting. It went on for two days; we went on the radio, we were interviewed, there was a public vote online and the public decided who they wanted to be Miss Personality. “After that, I was asked to go forward for the semi-finals …
