End of an era for Broderick

BRODERICK Furniture in Killanena has been selling furniture and providing local employment in East Clare for more than 75 years but it is to relocate to Ennis. Its flagship shop has been a feature of the East Clare village and drawing people from across the country to its scenic location overlooking Lough Graney. The business, which remains family-run, will begin the process of relocating as it prepares to centralise its operations in Ennis and close its doors in Killanena. The Broderick story began over 75 years ago, when Michael Broderick Senior opened a small grocery shop on a hillside in Killanena. Soon afterwards, he followed with the establishment of a petrol station and a general hardware store. After the war, Michael travelled by lorry to auctions in Liverpool to buy furniture, which he then sold in Killanena. ‘Epidemic’ of village signage thefts

THE theft of village signage has been described as “epidemic” by local Councillor Pat Hayes, who highlighted that signs have been stolen in four villages in East Clare. Councillor Hayes said Feakle, Caher, Flagmount and Killanena have had signage taken. He said some thefts have occurred in recent weeks, while others were some time ago. He said it is not the directional signage, which is usually the common problem, but in this case it is the larger signs for the villages themselves. “It seems to be specific to this side of the county. Directional signposts are also missing. The GAA one in Caher was taken down and a couple of business ones were taken as well. It seems to be an epidemic for the last while. Killanena woman changes her life

IN 2011 Killanena woman Anna Moroney grabbed the bull by the horns and joined Weight Watchers to try to and do something about her weight. The 24-year-old teacher was then 21 and weighed 26 stone 25 pounds. Her decision to lose weight was arrived upon following an incident on a night out. “I was working at the time in New Look in Galway and I was out, enjoying myself and having a ball. My friends were chatting with a few guys and one of the guys pulled me aside and said to me ‘what are you doing to yourself?’ “I would have got comments before about being overweight and being a whale, hideous comments, some really horrific ones but they would always have bounced off and wouldn’t have any impact.
