Clare dreaming of a green Christmas

The people of Clare are being urged to play their part in reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill this Christmas by availing of one of Clare’s five recycling facilities. The Environment section of Clare County Council says people can bring a carload of recyclable waste to its recycling centres and transfer stations at Ballyduffbeg, Lisdeen, Shannon, Scarriff and Ennis for as little as €5. Poulnasherry Bay subject of educational initiative

Five West Clare schools and volunteers from Kilrush Tidy Towns are participating in an environmental education initiative focusing on the aquatic and biodiversity resources of Poulnasherry Bay and its neighbouring Wood river catchment Poulnasherry Bay, a designated shellfish water on the Shannon Estuary, is located close to Querrin, Lisdeen and Moyasta. Utilising the award-winning ‘StreamScapes’ programme, Clare County Council and the Cork-based Coomhola Salmon Trust will host a series of field studies and theory sessions, backed up by a dedicated local environmental booklet that will be widely and freely distributed throughout the community. Ennis businesses back Green Fleadh

More than 20 Ennis businesses including hotels, restaurants, cafés, bars, and retail outlets are participating in the Green Fleadh Business Programme. Participants have made a commitment to have good waste management, to conserve water, be energy efficient and keep their patch clean. There is still time to sign up for this programme by registering on the Fleadh website fleadhcheoil.ie/about/green-fleadh . Green Fleadh window / door display stickers and certificate pledge will be provided to all those that register. A free green business consultation or visit is also offered to participating businesses where lots of tips and advice will be provided to reduce energy, waste and water costs. Sminky Shorts video adds bite to new council initiative

Clare County Council has teamed up with the creators of internet animation series Sminky Shorts to launch a new environmental initiative which aims to change dog owner behaviour in relation to dog litter. Funded under the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government’s Anti Litter Awareness Grant Scheme, the 80-second animated short highlights the responsibility of dog owners to clean up after their dog and features two cartoon pug dogs humourously conversing at the Cliffs of Moher. “The Sminky Shorts clip is a promotional tool and fun way to bring attention to the need for dog owners to take responsibility for their animals litter” explained Karen Foley, Environmental Awareness Officer with Clare County Council. “The clip will be used on Facebook and Twitter as a means of helping promote awareness of our Green Dog Walkers scheme and will also be included in part of our primary schools litter awareness programme,” she added Green Dog Walkers is a new scheme …
