Pandemic puts brakes on Matt’s cycling bow

August was to have been a memorable month for young Matt Griffin. The 15 year-old Ennistymon teenager was to have made his national bow at a major cycling event in Austria but the Covid-19 pandemic has put the brakes on that happening. “It’s a pity. We were looking forward to the event and its very disappointing that the Austrian cycling event has been cancelled. I suppose health comes first in situations like that,” concedes his father, Matthew. The youngster’s metoric rise in cycling circles is driven by desire and a dedication which sees him make a 220 round trip to Kanturk in North Cork for training spins with the local youth cycling club. But distance is no barrier as his father Matthew fulfils the taxi driver role, ferrying him to and from the training sessions. Extra time heartbreak for Kilmaley

Kanturk, Cork 1-23 Kilmaley 0-25 A cracking Munster intermediate club hurling championship final ended in a heartbreaking one point defeat for Clare champions Kilmaley at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick this afternoon after extra time. Six points adrift midway through the second half, Kilmaley put in a superb final quarter which saw them take a one point lead with a minute of normal time remaining only for the Cork side to battle back for a merited equaliser. It was tit for tat throughout the extra time which ended with a 60m free for Kilmaley drifting wide of the upright. As with any game that is so tight, there are plenty of talking points and these include two efforts by Kilmaley, one of which was signalled as a point, both been given as wide after some confusion and consultation amongst the officials.
