SHANNON Heritage is to be asked to look at the potential of developing a medieval visitor attraction in the lanes of Ennis. Ennis Mayor, Councillor Johnny Flynn, proposed the move at the December meeting of the municipal district committee, saying, “In light of the success of the Shannon Heritage section of Shannon Airport Group in the development and management of heritage properties,” that they should be asked to look at the potential of setting up a medieval streetscape attraction. He said he would like to see an urban heritage visitor attraction using the medieval streetscape, as seen around Chapel Lane and the community centre. Councillor Ann Norton backed the suggestion and said having received a presentation from Shannon Heritage, she thought, “They seem to be very open to ideas and suggestions and probably would be interested in looking at it. OVER €150,000 was spent on campaigning by the 58 candidates who contested the Clare County Council election last May. According to figures obtained by The Clare Champion, the 28 new county councillors spent a total of €87,434, while 30 candidates who did not secure election incurred expenses totalling €66,985, giving a total of €154,419. The newly-elected Mayor of Ennis, Johnny Flynn, topped the list with a figure of €5,204, of which €3,811 came from his own resources and €1,392 was spent by Clare Fine Gael. It included €1,946 on adverstising, €1,464 on election posters and €1,417 on other election promotional literature. He was closely followed by former Ennis Town Councillor, Frankie Neylon, who spent €5,200, which included €2,000 on advertising, €1,000 on publicity and other election material, €500 on transport and another €1,000 on his campaign workers. ONE million black bags of household waste are unaccounted for in Clare every year, the Mayor of Ennis has revealed. Councillor Johnny Flynn was commenting on the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey released this week. For the first time, IBAL inspected the cleanliness of national connecting routes between towns, which were found to be typically more littered than the towns themselves. In respect of Ennis, An Taisce reported, “scattered litter consistently along the Galway road. No one area was worse than another. While the litter was not heavy, it was certainly noticeable”. “It is a valid criticism,” said Mayor Flynn. “There are one million black bags of household waste unaccounted for in Clare every year and there is a huge problem of fly-tipping and illegal dumping, especially in the areas surrounding the urban centres. The development of a European standard campervan site off the motorway at Ballyalla Lake is among the ideas put forward in a recreational and sports submission to the Ennis and environs draft local area plan. In a 12-point submission, Councillor Johnny Flynn has given a lot of attention to injecting investment into the lake area, just a few miles from Ennis town centre. He wants consideration to be given to the provision of outdoor camping, motorhome and cabin/club sleeping accommodation in that area. Proposing a physical connection from Lees Road to Ballyalla Lake, the Fine Gael councilllor wants the “designation of lands at Lee’s Road, Drumcliffe and Ballyalla for an integrated connected sports and physical recreational hub for land and water-based sports and environmental activities.” This would include the development of a junior sailing training centre. Councillor Flynn has further called for the restoration of lake amenities that have fallen into disrepair.  

Fine Gael Councillor, Johnny Flynn is the new Mayor of Ennis has said he will not take the allowance of €12,000 that goes along with the mayoral chain. He was elected to the position at the inaugural meeting of the Ennis Municipal District on Tuesday afternoon. The role of mayor carries a maximum stipend of €12,000 and it was agreed at the meeting on the proposal of Councillor McNamara that the maximum allowance be allocated for the position. However, speaking after the meeting Councillor Flynn said that he would not be drawing down this stipend as per his election promise not to take any allowances or expenses. He explained that as he lives within a mile from the council chamber, he does not incur the same kind of expense as some full time councillors who live outside the town bounds. Fine Gael councillor, Johnny Flynn is the new Mayor of Ennis.  He was elected to the position at the inaugural meeting of the Ennis Municipal District on Tuesday afternoon. While the position of mayor has been abolished in most towns, it can be retained in towns where the population is in excesss of  20,000. The other council members in the Ennis area include Mary Howard and Paul Murphy of Fine Gael, Tom McNamara, Pat Daly and Clare Colleran of Fianna Fáil and Independents, James Breen and Ann Norton. Councillor James Breen was elected as deputy mayor on the proposal of Councillor Tom McNamara and seconded by Councillor Pat Daly. Mayor Flynn said he was “proud” to be elected as the new mayor for the newly aligned municipal district and said he would be “impartial” and treat its members with respect throughout his term. FINE Gael’s Johnny Flynn has retained his seat on Clare County Council, exceeding the quota after 12 counts. Speaking just before his victory was confirmed the Ennis man said; “I was delighted with my vote and I’m grateful to everyone who supported me and to my family. This election is a clear indication to Government parties that people are feeling the pain of the austerity measures that unfortunately were required. Certainly I’ve learned from the canvass that people believed hard decisions had to be made but it’s how they impact on people’s lives.” He said that the reduction of numbers on the county council and the abolition of town councils will increase the level of responsibility for those elected and that they need to “roll up their sleeves and get stuck in”.
