Imogen, the latest in a spate of storms, is lashing the Clare coastline today (Monday). AN exhibition celebrating the work of The Clare Champion’s award-winning photographer, John Kelly over the last 25 years will open tonight (Friday) in Ennis and a large crowd is expected to attend the event. The exhibition, entitled Between You, Me & The Wall, will run until November 28 in Glór and will showcase more than 30 photographs by the Mullagh man. On Friday night, John will also speak to well-known broadcaster Ciana Campbell about his most memorable photographs and the stories behind them. All proceeds raised on the night will go to the RNLI in Clare. As the staff photographer with The Clare Champion, John has chronicled the life of the county, capturing award-winning images and building up a reputation as one of the most talented photographers in the country. AWARD-winning Clare Champion photographer, John Kelly, is celebrating 25 years with the newspaper and, to mark the milestone, he will launch a special exhibition of his work on Friday, November 6 at Glór. “When I joined The Clare Champion in 1990, I remember covering the county show in the Showgrounds in Ennis and shooting 27 rolls of film. I went there and shot everything around me. Now, it’s about holding back and observing,” John said of the way his approach to photography has changed over the years. “I’ve learned now that you’re maybe watching and looking out for photographs and seeing what develops, rather than just looking at it in the moment. It’s about knowing that something can develop and putting your efforts into getting better rather then more photographs.” John said there are certain similarities between acquiring good timing as a photographer and being in the right place in a sporting context. “Someone said to me it’s like in …

Clare Champion photographer, John Kelly’s long string of successes in the Press Photographers’ Association of Ireland (PPAI) annual award scheme continued  in Dublin on Friday night. John’s remarkable gift as one of the country’s leading press photographers was underlined by the fact that not only did he win first prize in the 2015 Portrait category, but he also claimed third place in the same section.  Furthermore, John also won third prize in the Sports Features. The winning photograph is Body Builder, a striking image of Jason Morris of Toonagh, County Clare. Jason came second in the Irish Natural Bodybuidling Federation 2014 Under-68kg category. John’s other award-winning portrait is titled, The Old Man and the Sea. It shows Paddy Hanrahan from Cappa, Kilrush collecting seaweed as fertilizer for his nearby garden. The third prize in the Sports Feature is a dramatic image of Davy Fitzgerald in the rain after Clare hurlers loss to Tipperary in last year’s Waterford Crystal Cup. In congratulating John on …

THE people of Clare are used to seeing the creative mind of photographer John Kelly jump out of them from the pages of The Clare Champion each week but for the next year, the public will also get an opportunity to view his photography in a new setting. An award-winning photographer, John has worked with The Clare Champion for almost 25 years, displaying his passion for photography and for capturing the unusual of everyday life. In recent weeks, John was invited by Glór in Ennis to exhibit a selection of his favourite photographs from his extensive collection at the café and lobby. Seven of his photographs are on display in the building and take over from an exhibition by Christy McNamara. A PHOTOGRAPH by John Kelly of  holed  leather shoes worn out by  Councillor Cathal Crowe canvassing before the 2004 Local Elections has  ended up in a civics textbook, which is currently on the Junior Certificate syllabus. Councillor Crowe’s old shoes also form part of a display depicting Clare’s political history at the County Museum in Ennis. Shortly after becoming the youngest councillor in the country to secure a seat on Clare County Council in June 2004, the 21- year-old Fianna Fáil Councillor was captured by Clare Champion photographer John Kelly making the “V” victory sign through the worn out sole of his shoes. A few months earlier, the University of Limerick student, who was more used to trainers than leather shoes, made the short trip into Limerick City where he bought the famous shoes from his future wife, who had a summer shop in a well know city shoe shop at the time. By Carol Byrne CLARE Champion Photographer John Kelly has scooped his 12th Press Photographer’s Association of Ireland (PPAI) award He claimed second prize in the Daily Life and People category of the national competition, which had almost 2,000 entries from 112 photojournalists around the country. John’s winning entry, Room with a View, was described by the judges as “a striking image graphically illustrating life for large families living in the restricted space of a caravan. Great thought and imagination used to create this image”. The black and white photograph was taken while covering the story of a school principal who was trying to secure emergency accommodation for the Sherlock family. Caroline Sherlock and her seven children were living in a small caravan without electricity or running water, next to a river and beach at Cregg, Lahinch. Black and white is becoming more prevalent in John’s work of late, as he has chosen to reawaken his passion for the medium he …

  Clare Champion staff photographer, John Kelly, tonight added to his considerable collection of awards when he was awarded 2nd prize in the Daily Life and People Category of the AIB PPAI Awards. This follows his first prize win in the News category last year. In total, John has garnered 12 PPAI awards in his 20 years entering the competition. John’s monochrome image, Room with a View, depicts the living conditions of Caroline Sherlock, who shares a caravan with her seven children.
