Co-operation urged to cope with surge of domestic tourists

THE peak of the holiday season is coming within weeks, and west and north Clare are going to see huge numbers of visitors, as staycations will again trump foreign travel for most people this year. With the influx to come in mind, Fianna Fáil’s Joe Killeen put forward a motion calling for greater preparedness. The councillor’s motion called for, “Clare County Council, Fáilte Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, the Gardai and other relevant agencies, as well as pubs and restaurants, to come together to assess their facilities in preparation for the summer staycation and make the changes necessary, including temporary emergency parking, provision of extra toilet facilities and refuse collection, in order to promote greater preparedness for the anticipated influx of tourists.” In a written reply, Director of Service Leonard Cleary outlined some of the steps that are being taken. “In the post-Covid tourism context, visitors are encouraged to spend more time outdoors experiencing the Clare tourism attractions. …

€10m Ennis loan passed after heated exchanges

Reservations over funding ‘private company’ and possible neglect of other districts CLAIMS and counter claims were expressed by county councillors during heated exchanges before a controversial €10 million loan was approved for the Ennis 2040 Designated Activity Company (DAC) by a majority vote. Ennis 2040 Designated Activity Company (DAC) has been registered as a company to assist in identifying opportunities for development and employment in Ennis and making the town an attractive place to live and work. While councillors support investment for Ennis, several expressed grave reservations about the new funding mechanism proposed by the council executive at a meeting on Monday, and the lack of a similar package for rural Clare. The loan was passed by 23 votes to five, with Councillors Tony O’Brien, Gerry Flynn, Donna McGettigan, P J Kelly and Susan Crawford officially recording their opposition. Clare man new INTO president

Corofin man Joe Killen takes over as the new president of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation today (Wednesday) at their annual congressin Killarney. Joe Killeen, who is principal in Lough Cutra NS, Gort since 1987began his teaching career at Kiltrusten NS, Strokestown, County Roscommon. Joe became Gort Branch Secretary in 1987 and represented Gort INTO Branch and District 6 of the INTO (Galway/Roscommon) for over 20 years. In 2008 he was elected to the Central Executive Committee of the union to represent INTO District 6. He represented District 6 on the Small Schools Task Force set up in 2012 by the union to advise the executive on opposing proposals by the Department of Education and Skills to close small schools. Joe is also actively involved in a range of community, rural, cultural and sporting organisations. He comes to the role at a time of industial unrest among primary and secondary teachers over pay inequality.

Corofin man elected INTO vice-president

Corofin man Joe Killeen is the new vice-president of the Irish National Teachers’ Organisation (INTO). The principal of Lough Cutra National School, near Gort, was elected to the post at last weekend’s annual congress in Belfast. The Irish National Teachers’ Organisation has in excess of 43,000 members, of which 7,300 reside in Northern Ireland. Its members teach in the region of 600,000 pupils. Mr Killeen began his teaching career at Kiltrusten National School in Strokestown, County Roscommon, and became principal at Lough Cutra in 1987. In the same year, he became Gort INTO branch secretary. He went on to represent the Gort INTO branch and District 6 of the INTO (Galway/Roscommon) for over 20 years. In 2008, he was elected to the central executive committee of the union to represent INTO District 6, which has a membership of 2,500 teachers.
