Injury time heartbreak for Newmarket Celtic

Janesboro 1 Newmarket Celtic 0 For the second time in two weeks Newmarket Celtic have had to deal with the disappointment of being knocked out of a prestigious cup competition at the semi-final stage. Two weeks ago they wend down 3-2 to Pike Rovers in the semi-final of the FAI junior cup and this afternoon they lost out to Janesboro in the semi-final of the Munster junior cup at the Limerick club’s venue. Making this latest defeat all the harder to take is the fact that the game’s only goal came two minutes into ‘injury time’ and just as supporters were preparing for extra time. Niall Hanley scored the all important goal which will see Janesboro face their Limerick neighbours Pike Rovers in the final next month. While Newmarket had been under some pressure in the opening half, they had enjoyed the better of matters in the second period when they came close to breaking the deadlock on a few …

Newmarket well prepared for Janesboro

These are good times for Clare soccer according to Newmarket Celtic manager Liam Murphy, who is hoping to add further success when he leads Newmarket Celtic to Limerick for their Munster Junior Cup semi-final game against Janesboro on Sunday at 12 noon. Murphy notes Newmarket’s opponents will carry the favourites’ tag. “We are the underdogs. We are not stupid enough to think otherwise. They are about to retain the premiership in Limerick, something they have never done. They are trying to add a Munster Junior Cup to that and they are a force to be reckoned with. We have our work cut out to try and contain them and impose our game plan on them,” he told The Clare Champion. Newmarket met Janesboro at the same stage in this competition back in 2016, before losing out to St Michael’s in the final. That year, Janesboro defeated Newmarket in the FAI Junior Cup. Victory on Sunday would set up another match …

Newmarket and Janesboro in third showdown

For the third time in recent weeks, Newmarket Celtic will face Janesboro from Limerick. This time they meet in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup at Carew Park on Sunday at 2pm. Their first meeting was in the quarter-final of the FAI Junior Cup, a tie played at McDonogh Park in Newmarket where the visitors were 1-0 winners. On Sunday last, Janesboro crashed out of that competition when they suffered a 4-1 loss to Sherrif FC from Dublin at the semi-final stage. The County Grounds in Doora was the venue for their meeting in the Munster Champions Cup final two weeks ago and here again, the Limerick side took the honours, the score this time being 2-1 after the Clare champions were in the lead. There was little between the sides in both games, so Newmarket supporters are confident the tables can be turned this weekend. Celtic have a few injury worries going into this tie with doubts about …

Newmarket beaten in Munster Champions Trophy final

Newmarket Celtic   1                     Janesboro FC   2   ON Sunday Janesboro came to Clare for the second time in a fortnight and just as at McDonagh Park on March 13 they recorded a narrow win over Newmarket . As was the case in that FAI Junior Cup quarter final there were one or two refereeing decisions that divided opinion, but in reality the Limerick side deserved to take the honours, creating more chances over the 90 minutes. Newmarket took the lead after a fine goal from the potent Eoin Hayes after 23 minutes. However 13 minutes later Shane Clarke put Janesboro back on terms with an absolutely outstanding free kick from well outside the box that arrowed into the top corner of the net, leaving Niall Quinn no chance at all. Aled Harken had the winner in the 57th minute, his well struck effort from outside the box flying into the bottom corner of the net. For much of the second …
