1,200 runners on Shannon runway

Shannon Airport is set to make history again on Friday, July 4, when up to 1,200  runners line up for the first ever night-run on an Irish airport runway, in an event to raise fund for the Samaritans. Teaming up with Bank of Ireland the Runway Night Run will take place at 11pm when participants set off on the 5km run along what is one of Europe’s longest runways. The Samaritans is a designated Shannon Airport charity and the initiative has been boosted by the support of Bank of Ireland as lead sponsors. Lions, Irish and Munster rugby legend Keith Wood has also come on board as an ambassador for the event and will lead out the runners, limited to 1,200 people, on one of the most novel courses ever in Ireland for an organised run. Clare sporting heroes ‘selling’ Ireland

TWO Clare sporting heroes are challenging the entire nation to play their part in selling Ireland to foreign companies expanding into Europe. Three-time hurling All Star and All-Ireland winning manager with Clare, Davy Fitzgerald, has teamed up with Ireland and Lions rugby legend Keith Wood in a new ConnectIreland campaign which launches shortly at Shannon Airport. The duo are the latest high-profile ConnectIreland ambassadors to spur parishes, clubs and communities to link up with family, friends and contacts abroad to sell Ireland, boost job creation and create a future in Ireland for our brightest and best. Foley appointed Munster Head Coach

KILLALOE man Anthony Foley will take over as Munster Rugby head coach from July 1. He is currently serving as forwards coach under Rob Penney whom he will replace in the role. Foley has signed a two year contract that will keep him at the province until June 2016. The Clare man, who was capped 62 times for Ireland and 201 times for Munster, retired from playing at the end of the 2007/08 season. He joined the Munster backroom staff in July 2008 as technical advisor and assistant coach for defence. Since then he has held the position of head coach with both the Munster U-20s and Munster’s British & Irish Cup squad that reached the inaugural B&I Cup final in May 2010. He moved on to his current position, Munster Rugby forwards coach, at the start of the 2011/12 season. Zoe puts her heart into representing Ireland

By Peter O’Connell TWENTY-EIGHT hours of weekly training has transformed Zoe Kelly. The mother-of-two, who lives in Ennis, is to represent Ireland at the Arnold Classic Europe section of what is the largest amateur bodybuilding championships in the world. The event takes place in Madrid on the weekend of October 11 to 13. Zoe, who is originally from Surrey, will be one of six representatives on the Irish team. It’s hard to comprehend though that she is just 32 and has had corrective heart surgery in recent years. “I had corrective surgery for an underlying heart rhythm disorder. I was in intensive care for several weeks in Ennis. It was diagnosed in 2009. In 2010, I had two procedures in the Mater hospital,” Zoe told The Clare Champion last week. “I just kept having episodes of collapse. It’s important to say it wasn’t life-threatening. It was a quality of life issue. To carry on like that wasn’t feasible,” she added, …
