Minister Breen launches Shannon innovation hub

A new innovation hub has been launched in Shannon by the Minister for Trade, Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection, Pat Breen. It is hoped that the Gateway Hub at Shannon Airport House will become a major start-up centre for business in the Mid-West region. The launch event was the first official opening of a facility at the newly branded Gateway West section of the Shannon Free Zone, which is undergoing a €25 million phase one redevelopment. The Shannon Free Zone is currently home to over 150 companies, employing over 7,500 people. The Gateway Hub will transform the ground floor of Airport House – recently renovated at a cost of €1 million – into an incubation space for start-up businesses from different sectors, aiming to drive the development of Irish and international start-up companies in the aviation sector. Award for Shannon RehabCare

RehabCare in Shannon recently  highly commended in the Rehab Group Innovation Awards 2014 at an award ceremony in Dublin for its ‘What’s Good For Your Head?’ project. This project won the award in the ‘Health and Social Care Innovation’ category and was selected as a highly commended out of 64 innovative projects, which had been submitted from across the organisation. ‘What’s Good For Your Head?’ was set up to promote positive mental health in the community. Eight people with experience of mental health difficulties worked with a quality and planning co-ordinator in RehabCare to develop a project and booklet on positive mental health and wellbeing. The project examined what mental health is, looked at ways to recognise mental health difficulty and also provided some self-management practices. The booklet contains all of this information as well providing information on local support services. WIPRO Ltd has announced it will expand its workforce in Shannon by up to 100 employees, to meet increasing business requirements. Currently, the centre employs over 200 professionals and has developed into an award-winning organisation, delivering services to banks and financial services companies across Ireland and Britain. The Shannon centre provides Wipro’s IT and business process services’ (BPS) offerings to marquee retail banking and insurance customers.
