Locals channel anger in effort to restore polluted river

A new volunteer organisation is aiming to reverse the recent devastation caused to the Ballymacraven River in North Clare and restore it to its former glory. Thousands of fish were killed in the river in May of 2023 following a significant water pollution event. Earlier this month, Uisce Éireann were fined €10,000 for the incident, which threatens the viability of the river’s population of Atlantic salmon and eels. In the wake of this decision, the newly formed Restore Ballymacraven River Association now aims to painstakingly rebuild the habitat of the river and hopefully help restore the local fish population. Group spokesperson, Kevin Nunan, said the group welcomed the recent case against Uisce Éireann but also committed to working with the water utility in the future to help rebuild the river. “We were delighted with the outcome of the recent case again Uisce Éireann and we would like to pay tribute to the staff of Inland Fisheries Ireland who put all …

Traffic lights introduced at Blake’s Corner

Clare County Council is introducing a temporary traffic signals system on a trial basis at Blake’s Corner in Ennistymon to address traffic congestion in the area. The system will be put in place this Tuesday and will require monitoring with a view to optimising its performance in terms of improving traffic flow during peak periods in particular. The signals will be located on each of the three approaches to Blake’s Corner. Clare County Council is confident the proposed improvement scheme to address traffic congestion at Blake’s Corner will advance to the planning stage by the end of the year. The statement follows extensive consultation with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) on the optimum design for the scheme which proposes an inner relief road incorporating a new bridge across the Inagh River, 80m upstream of the existing bridge. Following consultation with An Bord Pleanala, Clare County Council also has been advised that the Part 8 planning process is the appropriate route through …

Public consultation on Blake’s Corner

CLARE County Council has announced that it is to hold a public consultation next week on the future of one of the county’s worst traffic bottlenecks. The council will show the “feasible options” aimed at resolving congestion at Blake’s Corner in Ennistymon. Each year, hundreds of thousands of people endure lengthy tailbacks caused by the narrow junction at Blake’s Corner, as they attempt to travel between Ennistymon and Lahinch. In January this year, the council announced that a report it had commissioned was recommending the construction of a new road and bridge across the Inagh River 80m upstream of the existing Conway Bridge and Blake’s Corner. However, it later emerged that three homes are on the proposed route of the “preferred solution”, including one occupied by a couple in their 70s and another by a young family. The subsequent backlash saw nearly a thousand people attend a public meeting in Ennistymon to discuss the proposal. A series of meetings followed …
