Sixmilebridge family call for access to life-changing therapy for newborns

WHEN Laura Collins and her husband Paul held their new born baby on New Year’s Eve not quite two years ago, it was a celebration the Sixmilebridge family will never forget. The couple had barely been allowed to hold their son since he was born, four days previously. A few hours after he came into the world, little Luan had had to be rushed to a neonatal care centre in Cork. Diagnosed with a form of brain damage known as Hypoxic Ischaemic Encephalopathy (HIE), Luan was in a race against time to secure treatment. His parents faced an agonising wait – first for a specialist ambulance to come from Dublin, then the transfer to Cork. Saturday update: No further Covid-19 deaths reported

THERE have been no new deaths reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre on Saturday (August 1), and no new cases diagnosed in Clare. Nationally, there have now been 1,763 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland. As of midnight Friday July 31, the HPSC has been notified of 45 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There is now a total of 26,109 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland. The number of confirmed infections in this county remains at 391. Details of the cases notified is as follows: • 23 are men / 22 are women • 77% are under 45 years of age (50% aged 25- 44 years) • 9 cases are located in Limerick, 8 in Kildare, 7 in Mayo, 6 in Cavan, 4 in Dublin with the remainder spread across 5 other counties. • 18 are associated with outbreaks or close contacts of a confirmed case • 12 cases have been identified as community transmission The HSE is working to identify …

UPDATE: Swimming ban on five Clare beaches

CLARE County Council has issued an update today (Saturday, August 1) raising its alert level for Lahinch beach to a swimming ban. Temporary bans remain in place, until further notice, on five other beaches. In a statement, the council said that following ongoing monitoring of the bathing waters at Lahinch, the notice has been upgraded from advisory not to swim to swimming prohibition as a result of increased bacterial levels. There is now a temporary prohibition on swimming at the following locations in County Clare due to elevated bacterial levels in the water: • Lahinch • Spanish Point • White Strand Miltown Malbay • Kilkee • Quilty (front beach). The elevated bacterial levels are as a result of heavy rainfall in the catchment area which subsequently discharges into or near the bathing area. Swimming bans in Kilkee and Quilty

Clare County Council, on the advice of the HSE, has placed a temporary prohibition on swimming in Kilkee and Quilty (front beach) due to increased bacterial levels in the bathing water. The situation is being monitored regularly and the prohibition on swimming will remain until further notice. Due to increased bacterial levels in the bathing water at White Strand Doonbeg and White Strand Miltown, it is advised not to swim at these locations until further notice. The risk from increased bacterial levels is a result of run-off from the catchment area after heavy rainfall.

Three new cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Clare

Three of the 12 new cases of Covid-19 are in Clare.  The number of confirmed cases in Clare now stands at 372. The new cases in Clare are the first confirmed in the county in a fortnight. There have been no new deaths reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre today. There has now been a total of 1,764 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland. As of midnight Saturday July 25, the HPSC has been notified of 12 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There is now a total of 25,881 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.  The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread. Proposals for expanded services at Tier 2 hospitals, including Ennis General

THE HSE has confirmed it is considering proposals to expand the level of services delivered from Tier 2 hospitals including Ennis General. This comes as the combination of overcrowding at University Hospital Limerick and the Covid-19 pandemic has been described as “a catastrophe waiting to happen” by chair of the special Oireachtas Covid-19 committee Deputy Michael McNamara. Liam Woods, HSE national director of acute operations appeared before the committee where Deputy McNamara asked about the potential for increasing services at Ennis, Nenagh and St John’s in Limerick. Deputy McNamara outlined that, “Limerick consistently has the highest numbers of people on trolleys”. Mr Woods acknowledged that there has “been a demand and supply mismatch”, and that a number of developments have been directed at growing and improving capacity. “We have to be ready at all times”

OFTEN the targets of strident criticism in the past, HSE representatives received a standing ovation at Monday’s meeting of Clare County Council, in recognition of their efforts in battling Covid-19. At the council meeting, the HSE representatives, including Colette Cowan, CEO of the UL Hospitals Group and Maria Bridgeman, Chief Officer of the Mid West Community Healthcare area and Dr Mai Mannix, Director of Public Health in the Mid West, explained the efforts that were made in the region to tackle Covid-19,while they praised frontline staff but also gave the message that danger has not fully abated. Dr Mannix said that in 13 previous pandemics, there have been second and third waves, illustrating the risks that are still lurking. Ms Cowan said that the pandemic had arrived in the region on March 4, a week or two before it arrived in other parts of Ireland. 32 new Covid-19 cases nationally

The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has been notified of 32 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Clare’s figure of 369 has not increased in the latest figures. There have been no new deaths reported (HPSC) today. There has been a total of 1,746 COVID-19 related deaths in Ireland. There is now a total of 25,670 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland.  The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread. As of midnight on Monday, 523,277 tests have been carried out. Over the past week, 49,264 tests were carried out. 157 tests were positive, giving a positivity rate of 0.3%. Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “Knowing the symptoms of COVID-19 and making contact with your GP immediately is a crucial component to us identifying and containing this disease. “Symptoms associated with COVID-19 can be similar to other common ailments.
