Gardaí investigate ‘suspicious’ house fire

A GARDA investigation is continuing into the cause of what has been described as a “suspicious” fire in an Ennis housing estate. One house completely destroyed and another very badly damaged at Dún Na hInse, off the Lahinch Road, in the early hours of Saturday morning. The alarm was raised by residents of the estate and when three units of the fire service and a garda patrol rushed to the scene they found the end house of the vacant three house terrace was ablaze and its roof had fallen in. The roof of the adjoining house had also caught fire and caved in but the fire crews managed to bring the blaze under control and prevent it from spreading to the third house. Once the fires had been extinguished, gardaí sealed off the scene pending completion of a technical examination. Gardai treat Corofin fire as “suspicious”

Gardai are treating as suspicious a fire at a house in Corofin which resulted in two people having to be taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment. The fire occurred around 8am this morning at the house at Gort Road and gardai have since completed a technical examination of the scene. Several units of the fire brigade and two ambulances from Ennis responded to the incident. Both men, one a pensioner who lived at the house, and a man who helped rescue him from the property, were treated with oxygen at the scene before being removed to hospital.

Elderly man escapes from Ennis house fire

An elderly man had a lucky escape last night after his home at Mc Hugh Villas in Ennis was extensively damaged by fire. The alarm was raised shortly before 7pm when neighbours noticed a fire in the front room of the end-of-terrace bungalow. McHugh Villas is an estate primarily occupied by elderly residents. It’s understood the man tried to bring the outbreak under control initially before the fire services were alerted. Three units of the fire brigade along with gardaí from Ennis responded to the incident. Fire personnel quickly set about tackling the blaze and firemen battled to ensure the fire didn’t spread to adjoining property. The fire was brought under control within 30 minutes.

Woman dies in North Clare house fire

A woman has died in a house fire in North Clare. GARDAÍ, ambulance services and three units from Ennistymon fire brigade attended the scene at Derrynavaha, Craggagh, Ballyvaughan after 7pm last night. The woman, whose name is yet to be officially released, is understood to have been in her 50s. She was alone in the house at the time of the incident. The fire brigade were called to the scene at 7.15pm and arrived half an hour later, by which time the woman had been removed from the house. Fire and ambulance personnel attempted to resuscitate the woman but she was subsequently pronounced dead. According to Clare’s Chief Fire Officer, Adrian Kelly, structural damage in the building impeded efforts to bring the fire under control. Gardaí in Ennistymon are investigating the fire, however it is not being treated as suspicious.
