Carroll goal not enough for Catholic Institute

Despite Cratloe’s Naomi Carroll finding the net for her hockey club Catholic Institute, the Limerick side fell short in their attempts to EY Champions Trophy title. They lost out 4-1 to Dublin side Pembroke who produced a perfect all-round team performance to add a first EY Champions Trophy title to the regular season crown they won a month ago. Catholic Institute were pipped to the EY Hockey League by the same opposition on the final day of the season. Carroll and co. will have to be content with a place in Europe and a quick revenge-mission next Saturday in the Irish Senior Cup final. The final itself was guaranteed to produce a first time winner with Pembroke’s 3-1 win over Loreto and Insta’s 3-2 success against UCD meaning both clubs reached the final in their first attempt at the playoffs. Cycling heroes pedaling to Clare

THE first all-female duo cyclists to compete in the ultra-endurance Race Around Ireland are expected to arrive in Clare on Wednesday next. Lisa Jacob, former Irish international hockey player with 139 caps, and Nikki Dorey, a pilot with Aer Lingus and competitive triathlete, are competing in the gruelling ultra-distance 2,150km non-stop race. The pair will alternate cycling three hours on and three hours off for 132 hours, or five and a half days straight, starting this Sunday. They are expected to arrive in Clare on Wednesday, travelling through Doolin, Lahinch, Spanish Point, Ennis and Sixmilebridge. Both girls are strongly passionate about mental health, so they are also fundraising €100,000 for one of Ireland’s leading mental health charities, Suicide or Survive. Also very prevalent, especially with the recent referendum on gay marriage, is the closely related association between mental health and LGBT equality, especially in the youth demographic.
