THE free public poetry reading series ‘Poetry in the Park’, returns for its second year to the Canon Quinn Park in Gort this Sunday. Taking place between 1 and 2pm, the event invites all local poets and budding poets to come along and read their poems, or recite poems from their favourite authors. “We are delighted to have public poetry back in one of the loveliest public facilities we have in Gort, Canon Quinn Park’, said Justin McDermott, organiser of Poetry in the Park. “We had some wonderful days of sunshine and poetry last year, and we are looking forward to hearing more of the talent of our modern local poets.” Any poets or budding poets interested in doing a reading at Poetry in the Park are asked to register in advance by emailing mcdermottjustin@hotmail.com.  People of all ages are welcome to come with friends and family, bring a picnic and enjoy the poetry in this wonderful local amenity park. GORT boxer Cliona D’Arcy won the European Youth Championship 81kg+ title in Bulgaria this evening, defeating Ukrainian fighter Polina Cherenko. It was a fine display from D’Arcy, who four of the five judges having her as the winner, with only one giving the nod to the Ukrainian. Indeed, three of the five had the Gort woman winning every round. While Cherenko had a clear advantage in strength and size, D’Arcy had far better movement and frequently caught her opponent with clean shots. The Ukrainian came forward almost continuously, but she was made look rather predictable by the cuteness of the Gort teenager, who ended up winning in some style in front of raucous Irish fans.

GORT boxer Cliona D’Arcy is on the brink of a European gold medal. Cliona has qualified for the final of the 81+kg European Youth Championship final, with a victory over Polish fighter Weronika Maja Bochen. In the final she will face the Ukrainian fighter Polina Cherenko. The championships are being held in Sofia and Cliona’s final will be the last fight of today’s evening session, which begins at 3pm, Irish time. A stream of the fight will be available on the Irish Amateur Boxing Association’s website, www.iaba.ie. Ireland has had a great championships, with the team guaranteed at least eight medals.

SPRING is here, restrictions are lifted and music performers everywhere are ready and excited to rise and shine. The annual Carpe Diem (Rise and Shine) concert makes a welcome return after its Covid-induced hiatus. The brainchild of Coole Music School’s director, Katharina Baker, Carpe Diem is the theme for a series of commemorative fundraising concerts in memory of Eimear Noonan, and Eli Murray, two avid young musicians, who died tragically in 2017 and 2019 respectively. The 2021 concert, postponed due to ongoing pandemic concerns, will now be staged in Gort on Saturday, April 2, in Sullivan’s Hotel, at 7.30pm. This uplifting concert entitled Carpe Diem, Rise and Shine, celebrates a return to performing live music by young people and spans many genres. Seasoned performers of traditional and contemporary music, joining the young people, will enhance the proceedings. A FIRST year student of Gort Community School has released his debut novel, which was written when he was just 11. Now 13, Joe Fahy from Derrywee West, Derrybrien, has launched a futuristic tale, entitled Glitched, detailing a battle for control of the world. Joe has also been enjoying the media attention surrounding the book. He made an appearance on Today FM’s Dermot and Dave in recent days, along with proud dad, Jimmy.  “[Glitched] is about a 12-year-old boy called Billy who was injected by these nanobots and he meets with some teenagers and he tries to stop a company called AEN from taking over the world,” Joe explained. “All the school kids in Ireland were injected one day by the company. It’s passed off as a vaccine. The chairperson comes into school to see if all the nanobots are working. Billy’s isn’t. It’s glitched.” Joe, also known as JE, told the Today FM duo that he wrote the book …

EMERGENCY services have been dealing with multiple road traffic collisions in Clare this evening as a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for Ireland remains in place. Crashes have been reported on several routes in the county including on the M18 motorway. Collisions were first reported at around 5.45pm on the M18 between Crusheen and Gort. The crashes, all single-vehicle incidents, occurred following heavy downpours of hail in the area. Units of the fire service from Ennis and Gort responded to the incidents along with Gardaí and National Ambulance Service paramedics. One collision was reported in the northbound lanes of the M18 at Tubber, however, on arrival at the scene, emergency services discovered another incident had occurred in the same area in the southbound carriageway. A third incident also occurred nearby in the northbound lanes further along the route. No one was injured in any of these collisions. A short distance away, on the R458 road which runs parallel to …

MORE than 140 people took to their bike on Sunday last, following Santa, as part of Gort’s very first #GortChristmasCycle. In his festive garb, Sean O’Neill led the group from Gort PlayGround to Sullivan’s Hotel where we were treated to hot chocolate, coffee. Entertainment followed by well-known local puppeteer Tommy Baker and Seamus, aka ‘Your Man’s Puppets’. There was a great mixture of big bikes, small bikes, trikes, electric bikes, fold-up bikes, cargo bikes, and even a recumbent bike. The event was made possible with the help of An Garda Siochana, who escorted participants safely, the marshals from various cycling groups such as Oranmore Cycle Bus, I Bike Oranmore, and Axa Community Rider David Murray frown Clarinbridge, were also involved. High Vis jackets and other merchandise donated by Galway Cycling Campaign and Tribeson Bikes. Organisers also thanked The Road Safety Authority and Cyclist.ie for supplying flashing bikelights. A VISION by Burren Lowlands to reimagine the Gort Market Square, was recently realised with the completion of the enhancement works on this much-loved public space.  Burren Lowlands CLG is a volunteer-led community development group whose mission is to make the region a better place to work, live and visit. The Market Square has always been central to the life of Gort town and surrounding communities. The Weigh House located here is a testament to the busy market days of the past, and a Friday market is still held in the Square.   Local architect, Brent Mostert, was responsible for the design. The fact that his office was once located above the Square inspired the design, as he looked upon the comings and goings around the space daily. The primary idea was to create a more open space to allow interaction between the Christ the King monument and people. After some initial fundraising by Burren Lowlands CLG, Town and Village …
