New Shannon campus part of €1bn investment by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board

A NEW multi-million euro College of Further Education campus in Shannon incorporating a national centre of excellence for aviation will form part of a €1bn investment in the region over five years by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board. The announcement of the €1bn investment was made at the launch in Shannon Airport of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board’s new five-year strategy. Setting out its vision to enhance the quality of learning and life in the region, Strategy Statement 2022 – 2026 outlines the role the ETB will play over the five years of the plan. This includes fulfilling the personal, social, economic and employability needs of the community it serves. The launch took place at Shannon Airport and was attended by the ETB Senior Management Team, ETB staff and invited guests, including Minister of State for Skills and Further Education, Niall Collins TD, and other public representatives. Stage set for inaugural Michael Cusack Day in Carron

THE significant contribution to Irish culture by the founder of the GAA will be celebrated next Sunday, with the inaugural Michael Cusack Day in Carron. A Shane Gilmore sculpture representing the central role of gaelic games in communities across the island of Ireland will be unveiled, exactly 173 years on from Cusack’s birth in Carron. A tree for each county will also be unveiled, along the Burren Fairy Trail and GAA Trail near the Michael Cusack Cottage, thanks to the support of the TOMAR Trust. Sunday’s event also will feature the launch of Going WeLL, a national wellness experience programme being developed nationally by the GAA to encourage people to take better care of their mental and physical health, and by so doing, to reconnect with their communities. Going WeLL is being rolled out on a pilot outreach basis to a range of communities, schools and FET (Further Education and Training) Centres from the Michael Cusack Centre this winter. It …

Third level education collaboration agreed

The CEO of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) and the president of Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) have signed an agreement to step up their collaboration. LIT already enrols 300 students through the further education and post-Leaving Certificate colleges sector every year. This number is set to grow significantly as LIT and the LCETB have now formalised their links, which will help to create smooth and seamless pathways for students. Such pathways will be supported by a bonus points system on the CAO for students entering first year. In cases of a good subject match, students completing Advanced Certificate Level 6 with LCETB affiliated schools and colleges will be offered advanced entry straight into second year for linked programmes. Currently, LIT students coming through from Further Education and Training (FET) are attending a diverse range of programmes including Applied Biology, Hospitality, Applied Social Care, Music Technology and Business.
