Gardai are treating a petrol bomb assault at Ennis Court House as an attack on the county’s centre of justice and on one of its most iconic historical buildings. Scenes of crime gardaí have just concluded a forensic examination at the court house after a petrol bomb was thrown through a window of the Family Law Court room shortly before 4am on Thursday morning. The culprit targeted a ground floor window of court room number 3 to the rear of the court house, which is where family law matters are typically dealt with in Ennis. Detective Inspector John Galvin is leading the investigation and said the petrol bomb was made using “some kind of glass device with accelerant in it and material”. “Someone knew how to put it [the petrol bomb] together alright. It was someone who wanted to cause damage, how much they intended to do is hard to say, had it gone in the wrong direction it could …

Gardaí have seized almost half a million euro worth of drugs following two searches carried out in Meelick and O’Briensbridge on Tuesday night. The controlled substance has yet to be analysed but is believed to be heroin. The seizure was made by garda in Limerick and Clare arising from an ongoing operation into the sale and supply of controlled substances in the Limerick Division and in neighbouring counties. One man has been arrested and is currently being detained at Roxboro Road Garda Station in Limerick under drug trafficking legislation. He can be held for questioning without charge for up to a week.

Clare Gardaí are advising business owners in the county to beware following reports of a deception scam in Ennis. Gardaí in Ennis have been alerted to at least one instance of a scam where a male has posed as a delivery man and has been paid in cash for a low value product. The incident reported involved a well dressed male calling to a shop in Ennis with bulk boxes of matches. He informed the shop assistant that their boss ordered the items and that he was to be paid cash on delivery. He  then gave over an order docket with a description of the product but it contained no contact details. He then asked to be paid an amount which was more than the product was worth. He left after receiving the cash and the sales assistant later discovered the manager never ordered the product. An Ennis woman in her 80s has died in hospital following a car crash which occurred last week. Mary Kelly from College Green in Ennis was involved in a road traffic collision with another car on the Ennis to Kilrush Road  at Darragh on the evening of July 21 last. Ms Kelly died on Friday July 25 in hospital. Her funeral will take place on Tuesday morning. Ennis gardai  are investigating the crash and anyone with information is asked to contact them on 065-6848100.

The Ennis Chamber Garda Accord met this week to review actions from the last Ennis Joint Policing Committee Meeting and to discuss the recent crimes on businesses in the town. Ennis Chamber established the Ennis Chamber Garda Accord in 2003 as a method of close communication and interaction between the business community and gardaí. Projects have included the establishment of the Business Liaison Garda Post and the campaign to install a state-of-the-art public CCTV system for Ennis, as well as ongoing collaboration in relation to the Key Holders Registry, Christmas pedestrianisation and crime prevention seminars. Representatives of Ennis Chamber raised the concerns of the business community in relation to the recent burglaries with Inspector Tom Kennedy, who reported on progress that has been made in relation to the crimes. He also referred to the advice and support that is available to businesses in terms of crime prevention measures, which is a free service from gardaí.

Gardaí have recovered the body of a man at a quarry close to Liscannor.  It is expected that the body will be removed later this afternoon to the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Limerick where a post mortem examination will be carried out by the State Pathogolist Professor Marie Cassidy. The body has not yet been formally identified. The area remains sealed off to facilitate a forensic examination of the scene.  

Gardaí in Ennis are still carrying out enquiries following the robbery of  the Xtra Vision store in the Market  early Monday morning, which was held up by a man brandishing what is believed to be a hammer. The incident occurred at approximately 7.30am, when the store was being opened by a member of staff. It is understood that the male employee was approached by a lone male, who was brandishing a weapon, after the alarm of the shop was de-activated. This person then made demands for cash from the employee. The suspect is understood to have had a hoodie covering his head, shielding his identity. The employee was not injured in the incident, which lasted a matter of minutes and the culprit fled the scene having stolen a quantity of cash. It is not yet clear in what direction he travelled. ROAD deaths in Clare have seen an 83% reduction since 2007. This places Clare in the top five counties in terms of the reduction in road deaths. The first year-on-year increase in the number of fatalities since 2005 came in 2013 and has been revealed in a recently published report by the Road Safety Authority (RSA). The publication looks at the number of road deaths in each county in Ireland, from 2007 to 2013, which placed County Clare in the top five safest counties, with the fewest number of fatalities. The report, entitled 2007 To 2013 Road Traffic Deaths by User Type and County, highlights the reductions in road fatalities in Clare between 2007 and 2013. However, while this statistic is a step in the right direction, tragically, since 2007, 23 drivers, three motorcyclists, two cyclists and eight pedestrians have been killed on roads in the county.
