Friends and family of missing Ennis man Eoin Madigan, whose body was recovered from a Galway canal on Friday morning, have expressed their thanks to all who had engaged in searches for him over the past few weeks. Eoin, from St Michael’s Villas, Ennis, had been living in Galway for the last number of years. He was last seen leaving Kelly’s pub in the city on January 5. There was an appeal last week for people to take part in searches in Galway on Saturday and Sunday however his body was found on Friday morning and removed to University College Galway Hospital for a post mortem examination. Eoin’s funeral mass was held on Monday morning at 10am with burial afterwards in Drumcliffe Cemetery. Eoin is deeply regretted by his mother Alice, brothers Patrick and Anthony, sister Nollaig, relatives and friends.

McNamara Park on Friday evening. The team will face the Connacht side at the Gaelic grounds in Limerick this Saturday afternoon at 4p.m. Naomi Carroll will start her first game in this campaign when she teams up with team captain Kate Lynch at midfield. For then earlier rounds Carroll was unavailable due to being on international hockey duty with Ireland. Carol O’Leary returned at corner back having missed the team’s last outing which was against Tipperary. The Chambers of Ennis, Galway, Limerick and Shannon, which represent 1,355 members with a combined employment level of 45,700, have welcomed the recent signing into law of the Shannon Airport Bill. The Chambers’ concern about the length of time it has taken to complete this very necessary piece of legislation has been well documented but the presidents are now unanimous in their belief that a new dawn has finally arrived for Shannon Airport with new Shannon Group plc finally being in a position to bring their very ambitious plans for the airport to fruition. In a joint statement, the presidents said,”The ability of the new airport management teams now in place at the airport is clearly evident. A five-year decline in passenger numbers has already been reversed in its first year as an independent entity, and double-digit growth in passenger numbers is forecast for 2014. The opening half was a very evenly-matched affair, ending with the sides level at 1-3 to 0-6. Rebecca Hennelly was responsible for five of Galway’s points from frees. Niki Kaiser was magnificent for Clare though and finished with a tally of 1-5. The goal came after Niamh O’Dea offloaded to her after a strong run, the Newmarket on Fergus woman found the net from a tight angle. Into the team come Patrick Kelly, Jack Browne, Paul Flanagan, Colm Galvin, Shane Golden and Tony Kelly and they will replace Donal Tuohy, David McInerney, Pat Donnellan, Colin Ryan, John Conlon and Conor McGrath. In the case of Ballyea’s Jack Browne, this will be his first taste of league action. Last year’s All-Ireland winning goalie Patrick Kelly will start his first league game this season. Regular wing back Pat O’Connor will partner Colm Galvin at midfield for this tie. David Duggan ALMOST every town and city in Ireland has a recognisable symbol or emblem that best represents them. When you think of Dublin, you think of O’Connell Bridge or the GPO. When you think of Galway, you think of Eyre Square. The statue of Daniel O Connell, which stands high above Ennis on a pedestal, also became a trademark for the town and just like Belfast City Hall it was an established rallying point, which it has still remained up to the present day. The monument was constructed by William Carroll, a local builder and contractor, whose work can be seen thought town, which includes the Cathedral tower, the Franciscan Friary and several bridges which are still all in use today. The notion that nothing was ever built with out controversy is appropriate when discussing the construction of the O’Connell monument, which was completed fully in 1865. Prior to its construction, the courthouse was the trademark of the town …

PART of the M18 is to close for five days next week to allow for “drainage assessment and improvement works”. Clare and Galway County Councillors have been calling for a safety audit to be carried out on the motorway since 10 car accidents took place on the route on one day last December. Now the National Roads Authority has said that from Monday to Friday next the Northbound lane of the M18 between Junction 14 (Barefield) and Junction 15 (Crusheen) will be closed. The Southbound carriageway will remain open during that time. The lane closure begins on Monday at 9am and the road will reopen on Friday at 2pm. Traffic will be diverted from the M18 Northbound onto the old N18 at Barefield but will be able to rejoin the motorway at Crusheen.
