Taking a trail around Lough Derg

A new trail showcasing the rich natural heritage of Lough Derg will be officially unveiled next week. Lough Derg (on the Shannon) Nature Trail is produced by the county councils in Clare, Galway and Tipperary, and co-funded by The Heritage Council and Lakelands & Inland Waterways. The 130-kilometre trail takes visitors from Portumna in Galway down the western shore of the lake, to Killaloe in Clare, and back up on the eastern side to Terryglass in Tipperary. The stops along the route, which can be travelled in any direction, include walking routes, lakeshore access, great bird watching locations, woodland parks for adventuring, and quiet spots to enjoy the beautiful vistas of Ireland’s third largest lake. Among the 24 discovery points featured is the monastic site at Inis Cealtra, known as the “Jewel of the Lough’, as well as the ancient woodlands of Portumna Forest Park, Derrycrag Wood, Raheen Wood and Cominchas Forest, the sheltered bays and harbours at Rosmore, Mountshannon …

Pensioner hospitalised after burglary

AN elderly man was being treated in hospital on Wednesday, following an aggravated burglary in his South Galway home. The 80-year-old was at his home in Creggmulgreaney, between Kilchreest and Craughwell, on Tuesday night when three men entered the house at about 9.45pm. The men assaulted the pensioner, threatened him and locked him in a bedroom, before ransacking the house and leaving with a sum of money. The man’s wife, also aged 80, was also in the house at the time. She was uninjured but the couple are said to be extremely shaken by the incident. The man was taken to University College Hospital, Galway where his injuries are understood to be not life-threatening. One of the men involved in the attack was described as being 6ft tall, of thin build and was wearing dark clothes. A second man was described as being smaller, in his early 20s and wearing a light coloured jacket. Anyone with any information in relation …

Galway snatch victory in injury time

Galway 2-15 Clare 1-17 A Jason Flynn point from a 60m free near the sideline, in the second minute of ‘injury time’, gave Galway a one point win over Clare in the opening round of the Allianz hurling league at Pearse stadium on Sunday. Flynn held his nerve to score his ninth point of the afternoon from the controversially awarded free. It was a harsh call against Jack Browne who was penalised for picking the ball off the ground but more annoying for Banner county followers was the failure of the match official to take any action when Galway officials changed the match ball ahead of the free. That said, however, great credit must go to the Galway full forward whose strike sealed the home win. Clare did have a chance to tie up the game when they were awarded a free overt 100m from goal. Goalkeeper Patrick Kelly saw his effort drift wide of the target and with it …

No easy league games, says Galway boss

EVERY county has massive ambitions heading into the 2015 National Hurling League, according to Galway boss, Anthony Cunningham. He pointed out that Kilkenny are league and All-Ireland champions; Clare will want to come back and repeat what they did in 2013; Tipperary want to pick up from where they left off in September; Cork are the Munster champions; Limerick were very unfortunate not to beat Kilkenny last year, while Galway were very close to Tipperary and Kilkenny. “There will be no easy games in what will be a very competitive league,” he pointed out as he looked ahead to this Sunday’s opening league tie when the Tribesmen will entertain Clare at Pearse Stadium. “We will probably be stronger in the second half of the league. At present, we have a good few injuries and we are unlikely to see players such as Davy and Niall Burke, Conor Cooney and Joe Canning before March. Five or six of our players have …

Clare hurlers determined to beat Galway

ALL-Ireland final hero from 2013, Domhnall O’Donovan looks set to be named at corner-back, the  position he starred in two years ago, for Sunday’s opening game in this season’s league campaign against Galway at Pearse Stadium in Salthill. The Clonlara man’s absence from the 2014 championship side was one of the big talking points of the year. He has played in most of their games to date this year and has impressed. Darach Honan, Peter Duggan and Jamie Shanahan won’t play any part in this weekend’s game and are unlikely to see much action in the coming weeks due to injury. The team to take on Galway is expected to be along the lines of that which faced Waterford in a behind-closed-doors challenge game in Sixmilebridge last Saturday night. David McInerney and Brendan Bugler didn’t start that game but both are expected to feature this week. Saturday’s challenge ended in a draw, 4-18 for Waterford to Clare’s 3-21. The home county led …

Nine million hear Clare woman’s voice

A North Clare woman wowed judges on the hit television programme, The Voice UK at the weekend. More than nine million people tuned in as Burren resident, Sharon Murphy sang Bob Dylan’s Forever Young in the show’s blind auditions broadcast on BBC 1 on Saturday. “To be honest, I have done gigs here and done gigs in other countries but I was not prepared for my nerves. It is very surreal because you are dealing with cameras. I normally play the guitar but this time I decided to focus on my voice because that is the show,” she explained. “I got on the stage and there were two Xs on the ground. You do the rehearsal and there is one X and then, when I went out, there were two so I didn’t know which one to stand on and then, on the very last note, I thought, this might not happen for me,” she added. Throughout the performance it …
