CLARE historian Daniel McCarthy is playing a key role in seeking approval for hurling to be included on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. The Cabinet has approved the application and it is due to be ratified by the Dáil in early 2016. A formal application for inclusion on the list must then be submitted to UNESCO by March 31 next. In outlining their interpretation of Intangible Cultural Heritage, UNESCO maintains cultural heritage does not end at monuments and collections of objects. It also includes traditions or living expressions inherited from ancestors and passed on, including oral traditions, performing arts, social practices, rituals and festive events. Lissycasey man Daniel McCarthy is manager of the GAA’s Heritage Framework Policy, which identified the merits of seeking UNESCO designation for hurling. It was a good day for Clare soccer as the Oscar Traynor side defeated Mayo but there was disappointment for Clare GAA teams competing in provincial competitions as Corofin and Ennistymon bowed out. Clare 2 Mayo 0 Clare moved a step closer to the play offs in this season’s Oscar Traynor, inter league junior soccer competition, when they scored a 2-0 win over Mayo at the county grounds in Doora on Saturday evening. In atrocious conditions, Clare scored twice in the opening half to move to the top of the table in their group. With one game to play when they travel to take on Roscommon, Clare know that a win at the Connacht venue will see them through to the next stage. A moment which represents an iconic day when sport transcended politics – the 2007 victory for Ireland in an unforgettable rugby clash with England in Croke Park – will be unveiled in a stunning sculpture at Shannon Airport on Friday. The 6 metre piece, titled ‘The day That Changed Ireland’ , captures a famous Irish line-out that saw rugby legend Paul O’Connell, raised by teammates John Hayes and Donncha O’Callaghan, in the second half of the treasured game and will stand in the airport terminal building for future generations to savour. The sculpture is a representation of a photograph by Irish Times photographer Cyril Byrne, an image that has already been captured in an official An Post stamp. The 2007 game stands out as one of the great Irish moments of the new millennium, marking a symbolic new chapter in Anglo-Irish relations as Ireland and England met for the first time in any sport at the home of GAA. THE Kemmy Business School at the University of Limerick has announced a graduate business scholarship programme for female county GAA players. Dr Philip O’Regan, dean of the Kemmy Business School and Aoife Lane, WGPA chairperson, signed a memorandum of understanding at the launch of the programme last week. The scholarships will see recipients receive a 50% fee waiver for taught postgraduate programmes at the Kenny Business School in areas such as economics, finance, taxation, human resource management, entrepreneurship, marketing, project management and many more, along with the opportunity to study at a campus equipped with some of the best sporting facilities in the country. Dr Fergal O’Brien, assistant dean, postgraduate studies at the school highlighted the shared competencies in sporting and academic success – determination, persistence, hard-work and dedication, while Aoife Lane spoke about the close ties between UL and the WGPA, with five of the seven founding members of the association currently or previously affiliated to the university. RTE sports commentator and broadcaster, Marty Morrissey has been named April Cork Person of the Month, to mark his contribution to sport, especially GAA sport, over the years. Marty, born in Mallow, told Brendan O’Connor on a recent Saturday Night Show, ” I am very proud of my Cork blood and my Mallow roots, and although a Clareman, I am deeply honoured at receiving this award”. Mallow’s Michael O’Neill, now living in Dublin but a frequent visitor and activist in Mallow, nominated Marty Morrissey for the award. “Marty’s mother was Mallow native, Peggy Twomey and his father taught at a local Mallow school. The family finally settled in Clare, where Marty’s father came from,” said Mr O’Neill. Clare 1-14 Fermanagh 2-9 PLAYING the best football of their 2015 league campaign, Clare secured their division 3 status for 2016 with an ultimately narrow win over Fermanagh in Cusack Park on Sunday. It was their third league win of 2015. Played in front of an attendance of 938, Clare led 1-14 to 1-5 with just six minutes left and the game looked over. However Fermanagh hit the home county for 1-4 without reply in the closing minutes and until their last attack was repelled, there was a nagging anxiety amongst the Clare supporters that the already promoted Fermanagh might bang in a late goal, which would have relegated the home county. Clare knew that a win would keep them in division 3 next season and they set about making sure that happen, although it took them 13 minutes to score, when Jamie Malone kicked the games opening point. Limerick 2-10 Clare 1-5 CLARE produced their worst display of their 2015 NFL division 3 campaign when falling to Limerick by double scores in Newcastlewest on Sunday afternoon. It was Clare’s third successive league defeat. Limerick won simply because they were significantly more committed than Clare and completely dominated the last 25 minutes. Although Clare played with a very strong breeze in that second half they failed to score in the last 26 minutes. They were 1-4 to 0-2 behind at half time but just nine minutes into the second half the teams were tied at 1-5 each. It looked inevitable that Clare would go on and record a badly needed win. The Clare goal was scored by Pat Burke from the penalty spot afte pSeanie Buckley, under pressure from Podge Collins, picked the ball off the ground in the small square. Armagh 3-11 Clare 1-11 TEN points down at half-time, Clare produced a stirring second half display to drag themselves to within two points of Armagh half way through the second half. However it wasn’t sufficient to reel in the visiting county and joint division 3 table toppers. A second Tony Kernan goal, four minutes from time, sealed the win for Kieran McGeeney’s team who had lead 2-8 to 0-4 at the interval having comprehensively outplayed Clare in the opening half. Ironically the home county started very well and led 0-2 to 0-0 seven minutes with Shane Brennan and Jamie Malone pointing from play.
