Peadar gets on his bike for Samaritans in Ennis and Clare

ENNIS’ Peadar White will be getting back in the saddle this Friday in support of the Samaritans Ennis and Clare which is facing a significant loss of funding this year. Every year Peadar takes part in a sponsored cycle fundraiser at the Height to raise funds and awareness of the Samaritans. However, the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that Peadar has had to change his initial plans and is now taking on a ‘socially distant’ 12 hour cycling challenge at home. Peadar explains, “I had been in training since Christmas for this and we had it all arranged to do a cycle in the Height but that all had to be cancelled because of Covid-19. Then we were thinking about it and realised that I could do it at home. I’ll be cycling outside in my garden if the weather is good, and if it starts to rain I’ll just move the bike into my garage, I’m cleaning it out right …

Bullseye for Pieta House as Anderson visits Ennis

PERHAPS the most entertaining night’s sport that will be seen on TV in 2015 came in the early days of January, as Gary Anderson won the World Darts Championship, pipping the legendary Phil Taylor, and overcoming some ferociously bad luck in the process. Taking on the 16-time World Champion, the Scot would have felt he’d need every scrap of good fortune going but, instead, he suffered bounce-outs and Robin Hoods (where darts rear-end each other for no score) galore, before eventually winning 7-6, taking the world title for the first time. Millions watching on Sky felt the title was slipping from the Flying Scotman’s grasp as the night went on, and the champion admits he shared their fears. “Aye, yeah, everything was against me, the three darts falling out – you know, at one stage I said it’s definitely not meant to be. That was the way my luck was going but I just stuck in. In the second leg …

Anne’s crew remember her to Rapunzel

STAFF members in St Joseph’s Hospital are planning a ‘crew cut’ for a fundraising event in memory of their former colleague, Anne Fox, who lost her battle with cancer in September 2013. Three of Anne’s former colleagues are stepping forward for the short back and sides by hairdressers from K&G Hair Salon on Parnell Street, at the function in O’Keeffe’s Bar, Lifford, on February 27. But that’s not all. The group, and the 10-year-old niece of one of the volunteers and the daughter of another, will then hand over their tresses to the Rapunzel Foundation to make into wigs for children and adults who suffer from alopecia. Tommy Guilfoyle, Deirdre Allan and her daughter, Mary, who works in Ryan’s Centra, and St Joseph’s colleague, Nuala Casey haven’t had a haircut since last April or May. Tommy’s niece, Ava Burke, aged 10, a pupil in Gaelscoil Micheál Chiosóg, has never had more than a trim. Now she’s prepared to have 14 …

Marital mayhem ahead as Kilmurry prepares for Mr and Mrs night

AS Kilmurry McMahon prepares to stage a fundraising Mr and Mrs night on Friday, Martin Keogh, who will present the evening along with Debbie O’Shea, has offered some sound advice on how a man can keep his wife or partner happy. “Always say ‘yes’ anyway,” Mr Keogh, a former Shannon Gaels, Clare and Munster footballer, advised. The Tullycrine man’s words of wisdom didn’t cease there.  “Agree to everything and make sure to give them breakfast in bed once a year, for the first year of marriage,” he added. Mr Keogh even has a strategy for putting off jobs that his wife, Mary, feels he should be immediately seeing to. “Tell them what they want to hear, especially when jobs have to be done. But at the same time, try to put things on hold for as long as you can. When you are getting all picture and no sound, it’s time to get it done. Or make some shape anyway,” …
