Kilrush and Scariff are venues for maritime cultural youth festival

KILRUSH and Scariff are to be included as venues for a youth festival taking place at the end of August to celebrate maritime arts, heritage and culture. Scairt na hÓige is being organised by the Local Creative Youth Partnership (LCYP) of Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) and will also take in locations around the Shannon Estuary including Foynes and Limerick City. The youth participation festival takes the Shannon waterway as its inspiration and will feature workshops in a range of art forms and maritime culture. Music Generation Clare and Music Generation Limerick City, both partners in the festival, will deliver workshops and performances in Kilrush and Foynes against the backdrop of the magnificently restored historic ship ‘Ilen’, when it sails into the lower Shannon, mooring in each harbour town for two days. “Over the course of the ‘Ilen’ visit, Kilrush Marina and Foynes Yacht Club will become animated with workshops in music, dance and story as well …

Shannon Estuary drive unveiled

Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Patrick O’Donovan has unveiled the route for the Shannon Estuary Drive – the first in what is hoped to be a series of drives to be developed by Fáilte Ireland in collaboration with local stakeholders The aim is to encourage visitors to discover the variety of inland visitor experiences as they travel along the Wild Atlantic Way. The Shannon Estuary drive is a looped route of approximately 135 miles. “The Shannon Estuary Way new visitor experience provides a significant opportunity for Limerick and Ennis, as gateway towns to the Wild Atlantic Way, and will open up the region’s inland hinterland to visitors as well as support the strong local accommodation base and variety of visitor attractions and services along the route. “As the Wild Atlantic Way continues to grow, we can now start to develop additional experiences for visitors to enjoy and, through initiatives like this, we can start to develop tourism activity …

Shannon Estuary bird study

A year-long bird population and habitat survey will be carried out along the Shannon Estuary, taking in 1,220 hectares of land. The study is being undertaken by environmental consultants McCarthy Keville O’Sullivan, on behalf of the Shannon Estuary Strategic Infrastructure Framework Plan (SIFP) Steering Group, comprising stakeholders engaged in the development and management of Ireland’s largest and deepest estuary. The region’s local authorities in Clare, Kerry and Limerick have joined with Shannon Group and Shannon Foynes Port Company in promoting ‘Deep Water Marine Investment Opportunities’ on 1,220ha of land at six strategic locations deemed appropriate for marine-related investment. The sites include Moneypoint (280ha) and Innismurry/Cahericon (65ha) in Clare; Askeaton (98ha), Foynes Island (40ha) and Foynes Port and adjoining lands (186ha) in Limerick and Tarbert-Ballylongford landbank (550ha) in Kerry. Chemifloc to increase jobs

Shannon-based Chemifloc, the largest producer of water treatment chemicals in Ireland, has completed a €5 million investment in new bulk liquid chemical storage facilities at Foynes port. Foynes is the largest of Shannon Foynes Port Company’s ports Five new jobs will be created by Chemifloc, bringing total employment in the Shannon headquartered company to over 40 people.  This latest investment brings to over €10 million Chemifloc’s investment at Foynes since it established bulk storage facilities there more than 10 years ago. Chemifloc’s facility at the County Limerick port is now the most advanced in the country and positions the company as it embarks on an expansion programme into new sectors including the electronics, pharmaceutical, dairy and manufacturing industries. MEPs to meet Shannon Estuary group

Seán Kelly MEP, is hosting a visit by a European Parliament delegation to the Mid-West this week. MEPs will meet company representatives from Shannon LNG and Shannon Foynes Port tomorrow (Thursday). The MEPs belonging to the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy are on a fact-finding mission to learn about the local innovations and research in the area of technology and energy. IBEC seeks candidates support on road projects

Ibec Mid-West and Kerry has called on all General Election candidates to support key road projects that will make the region a better place to live, work and do business. Completion of the M20 Cork to Limerick and N69 Foynes to Limerick projects must be prioritised to support job creation and the development of the region’s economy. Ibec Mid-West and Kerry regional director, Sinead Mullins said, “With half a million people living within 10km of the proposed motorway, the crucial M20 Cork-Limerick project needs to be urgently progressed. Gardaí seek help to trace sex offender

Gardaí at Henry St in Limerick are seeking help in tracing convicted sex offender, Mian Mujahid Ali Shahid (commonly known as Mian Shahid) following a request for assistance from the UK Police. It is believed Mian, who is a 19 year old Pakistani national, travelled to Ireland from Scotland earlier this year. He was last seen in the Foynes areas of Limerick on August 11 last. Mian Shahid was convicted (in his absence) at Stafford Crown Court on April 13 last of two counts of sexual assault of a female (18 years of age). A warrant was issued for his arrest on April 14. On May 20, at the same court, he was sentenced to 30 months imprisonment for this offence, also in his absence. “Following the receipt of a European arrest warrant, gardaí have carried out extensive enquires but have failed to establish his current whereabouts. Expect delays on Cork road

CLARE road users tavelling to or from Cork City or parts of County Limerick can expect to encounter serious delays on a number of dates in the weeks ahead, starting on this Wednesday. The gardaí have said it is anticipated that delays will occur along the N20 between Charleville and Limerick City, and along the N69 from Limerick City to Foynes, due to the transportation of abnormal loads from Charleville to Foynes along these routes. Road users are advised that delays will occur along this route from 10am to 5pm on Wednesday; this Friday, Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15. Gardaí are requesting that all road users exercise caution and patience when travelling along the planned route when the convoys are present. The abnormal loads being transported are significantly higher and wider than normal loads, extending approximately 2 feet beyond the width of standard HGV trailers.
