Water levels in Lough Derg have continued to fall overnight and the flow through Parteen Weir will remain at 195 cubic metres per second today (Friday). The situation will be reviewed again tomorrow. Any increases in the flow of water through the Weir, which will depend on actual rainfall in the Shannon catchment in the coming days, will be advised through the normal channels and by press release. This level of water flow will continue to have associated flooding to land and property in the vicinity of the Shannon downstream of Parteen Weir including the areas of Springfield, Montpelier, Castleconnell, Mountshannon (Annacotty) and the University of Limerick. Other areas between Parteen Weir and Limerick may also be vulnerable to flooding due to local issues. ESB is continuing to monitor the situation in consultation with the local authorities.

All electricity customers have been warned to be extra vigilant as flooding begins to recede. ESB Networks reminds members of the public and emergency services to exercise particular care when moving around flooded areas in boats and other flotation vehicles. “The electricity network is designed to have ample clearance for access and egress during normal conditions. However, when areas are flooded, this clearance level may be affected. The electricity network is live and should not be approached. Electricity wires are dangerous and, even at close proximity and where clearance is compromised, you should not pass under them. “If you see any sagging electricity wires or wires submerged in water, please do not steer your boat over these. This follows a reduction in flow to 405 cumecs yesterday. The situation will be reviewed again tomorrow. Howevere, this level of water flow will continue to have associated flooding to land and property in the vicinity of the Shannon downstream of Parteen Weir including the areas of Springfield, Montpelier, Castleconnell, Mountshannon (Annacotty) and the University of Limerick. A SOUTH Galway man, whose farmyard and milking parlour are under water, has described the “terrible mental strain” he feels from the loss of his livelihood and his efforts to keep his herd of 95 cows alive. “Two days after Christmas, the water came into the yard. It was like the tide coming in on top of us,” Micheál Flaherty recalled. “I don’t know what I will do, to be honest,” the Tierneevin dairy farmer admitted, “because the parlour will cost a lot of money. We will have to rewire it completely. It is all under water. It will take months for the water to even go away. If it stopped rising today, it would still take three months for the water to recede. Water levels on the Lower River Shannon at Springfield in Clonlara, have risen two inches following overnight rainfall and are now approximately 4-5 inches below the November 2009 peak level, which was reached on Saturday night last. Clare County Council says 8mm of rainfall during Wednesday evening and overnight has contributed to the rise in water levels but that further increases are not anticipated during today, Thursday. The council’s area staff, assisted by The Defence Forces, are continuing to provide support on the ground in Springfield, as well as assist in the transportation of residents of properties isolated by floodwaters. Meanwhile, the ESB confirmed that levels in  Lough Derg stabilised in the past 24 hours and that the flow of water through Parteen Weir will remain at 470 cumecs (cubic metres per second) today.
