The way is clear for the semi-finals of the Clare senior hurling championship, the pairings for which will be decided on Monday evening, after the remaining two quarter finals took place at Cusack Park this Sunday afternoon. Feakle turned in an impressive performance to record a 2-19 to 2-15 win over Wolfe Tones who played the final eighteen minutes with fifteen men after Ben O’Gorman was sent off. Dealt a huge blow in mid week when inter county forward Aron Shanagher was ruled out of the tie, the loss of O’Gorman left the Shannon side without two key players. That said, it would be wrong not to credit Feakle who played very impressively and picked off some excellent scores in the process. Every championship produces shock results and so it was as the race for the Canon Hamilton trophy got under way in Clare. Unbeaten in league and championship last season, champions Sixmilebridge were rocked when beaten by the minimum margin by Crusheen at Cusack Park this Saturday evening. These teams have produced some very close contests in recent years and this proved to be no different. Sixmilebridge looked to be edging in front when they went two points clear with ten minutes to play but four unanswered points from Crusheen proved decisive. One point separated the teams at the end of normal time with two minutes of ‘injury time’ to play. The champions piled on the pressure but Donal Tuohy in the Crusheen goal made a great save from Alan Mulready at the expense of a ’65. THE theft of village signage has been described as “epidemic” by local Councillor Pat Hayes, who highlighted that signs have been stolen in four villages in East Clare. Councillor Hayes said Feakle, Caher, Flagmount and Killanena have had signage taken. He said some thefts have occurred in recent weeks, while others were some time ago. He said it is not the directional signage, which is usually the common problem, but in this case it is the larger signs for the villages themselves. “It seems to be specific to this side of the county. Directional signposts are also missing. The GAA one in Caher was taken down and a couple of business ones were taken as well. It seems to be an epidemic for the last while. I would very much be appealing to the public out there. There might be huge value in those signs but it is the communities that put them up and maintain them. They are part …

A  FEAKLE man, who called a taxi to bring him from his digs in Foynes to a Shannondoc surgery in Newcastle West, had collapsed and was not breathing by the time they arrived at the surgery, an inquest heard this week. Thomas (Tom) O’Donoghue (41), from Main Street, Feakle, was working with Foynes Engineering and staying in the Shannon House bar and guesthouse in Foynes at the time of his death, December 14 last. The inquest in Newcastle West heard that Mr O’Donoghue, a single man born in April 1974,  had gone upstairs about 10pm but came back down about 11pm, complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. The co-owner of the guest-house, Richard O’Connor, said in a deposition read out at the inquest, that he was out for a walk when one of his staff rang to say that Mr O’Donoghue was complaining of breathing problems. He returned to Shannon House, where he saw Mr O’Donoghue “slumped over”. …

FEAKLE native, Kathleen Hayes Rollins Snavely, Ireland’s longest-lived person, passed away yesterday (Monday) morning in Geddes, Syracuse, New York State. Born Kathleen Hayes, one of five children of Patrick and Eileen Hayes in Feakle, on February 16, 1902, she travelled from Cobh on the Sythia as a 19 year-old in 1921 to Syracuse, was married and widowed twice, helped to build successful dairy and lumber businesses and had been living in the Centers at St. Camillus, a retirement home in Geddes, Syracuse since suffering a fall when she was 102 years old. Kathleen lived for 113 years and 140 days and on March 26 this year, moved past Annie Scott – who’d died in 1996, at the age of 113 and 37 days – to become the longest-lived person, ever, from Ireland. Plans to promote Clare as a County of Culture during 2016 have taken a significant step forward with the issuing of a call for expressions of interest for key cultural events and festivals during the year. The County of Culture initiative was first announced in March after Ennis was designated as the host town for next year’s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. The Clare County Council-led initiative will incorporate the development of a programme of cultural events, to be promoted nationally and internationally, around the prestigious annual event which is expected to attract up to 400,000 people to Ennis in August 2016. The council is now calling on community groups and individuals throughout Clare to submit expressions of interest for cultural festivals and events that will form part of the County of Culture programme. The local authority anticipates that the scheme will support a minimum of four projects each to a maximum value of €10,000. Expressions of interest are invited from …

An East Clare woman has broken the record as the oldest person ever born on the island of Ireland. Last year, United States resident Kathleen Snavely made history as the oldest person ever from the Republic of Ireland but now, over a month after her 113th birthday, she has taken the title as the oldest person from the island of Ireland since records began, passing out Tyrone woman Annie Scott . Kathleen Hayes Rollins Snavley was born in Feakle on February 16, 1902 and is a distant relation of renowned fiddle player Martin Hayes and former Mayor of Clare Pat Hayes. Originally from Garraun, Kathleen left when she was 19 in September 1921 from Cobh and went to her uncle in Syracuse, New York State. While there, she met and married her husband Roxie Rollins, who died in 1968, aged 66. The Clare woman later married Pennsylvania businessman Jesse Snavely. After he died she returned to Syracuse, where she still …

FEAKLE woman and Ireland’s oldest person in history, Kathleen Snavely celebrated her 113th birthday in Syracuse, New York State, on Monday but earlier this year she took time out to correspond with pupils at Feakle National School. Mrs Snavely was chosen by Róisín Quilligan and Siobhán Tuohy as part of their Flat Stanley project in school. This project is based on the Flat Stanley books, written by Jeff Brown Stanley, which sees the Flat Stanley character travel the world in envelopes. It began in 1994 in Ontario, Canada, when Dale Hubert had the idea of having children create their own Flat Stanley paper cut-outs and mailing them to friends and family around the globe, in order to foster authentic literacy activities for kids and get them excited to write about Stanley’s adventures. In Feakle, pupils have written to and received responses from a number of famous people, including President Michael D Higgins, Channing Tatum, Ryan Tubridy, Henry Shefflin, Brian Gavin, …
